Another average speed

I take a certain route to work in the morning. Due to some road works and heavy traffic I only averaged 10mph for the first half of the distance. How fast do I need to go on the second half to bring the average for the whole trip to 20mph?

Maybe you need to explore some new routes

Hello Richard,

The distance does not come into the equation, as the time you have taken for half the distance is the time you need to average 20mph for the total distance. In other words, you could never reach a speed fast enough on the second half distance in order to average 20mph for the total distance as there is no time left.

Ron.

Well done Ron :)

I found that one in a mag I got yesterday - thought it was too much of a coincidence to ignore so had to post it up

Well, the mathematical answer is the second half must be done @ infinite speed, which is practically impossible! :p

I agree with Ron this time!
