An Idea on Sound Deadner

Hi
I have removed some of the sound deadner from my engine bay, because of the age some of it has split and it is looking a bit tired. When i glue it back in I was thinking of spraying some stone chip on it to spruce it up, giving the bonnet material the same treatment. The Dinitrol stone chip i have is matt black and has a slight roughness to it.

There is just one thing im not sure of, Does it need to be fire proof? it wouldn't be easy making the moulded shapes out of a roll of new stuff but the last thing i want to do is cover the bonnet in something that is going to catch fire.

What do you all think? Just don't want tatty deadner ruining the look of the resto

regards

When Tom and I were having this exact conversation we decided it would be a bad idea to improvise with materials. Luckily we had a decent sound deadener that scrubbed up OK.

Woolies trim is the place to buy everything you'll need :-D

Is it "sound deadener" or "sound barrier"? In the case of the underbonnet probably the latter. On the firewall probably both (although damping probably best done from inside).

If it is old and cracked and no longer stuck to the metal then it probably functions as neither.

Replace it. Modern materials are a lot better anyway and the appropriate ones are fireproof.

Hi, I read somewhere and was under the impression that the purpose of the lining material
on the bonnet was a thermal barrier to avoid paint cracking. The sound deadening is inside
the car. In fact the bonnet blanket on the P5 and P5b is fibre glass in a cotton cover sprayed
with a Borax solution as the fire retarder.

In regards the bonnet...just use a matting of suitable material and fasten it with the wire frame.
Don't use anything that actually adheres to the under surface...reason being is if you ever get a small dent/dents in the bonnet, you will never be able top tap them up as the under surface is compromised to work the dolly and hammer...so then your left with "bog" as your only option...or scraping it all off...which could possibly show through the alloy anyways.

Thanks guys,

Thanks for the woolies link. The sound deading stuff they have looks the job for the bonnet.

The bonnet insulation isnt bad apart from big hole in the top surface so ill replace this anyway. Yeah I wouldn't glue this in place.

My thoughts were mainly regarding the peaces under the screen and around the heater box. When i took these out some split in half, resulting in me leaving half of it on the fire wall. I just thought before i glue it back in, if there was something i could paint on it to clean it up and make it look black again. I just wondered if anybody had done it. Ill probably evo stick them back on the fire wall. I took it out to paint the engine bay and to insect the quality of the firewall....which was still nice original primer :) I would love to use new stuff but a lot of it is molded.

Thanks
