Alternator mounting

I am stumped.

I am transplanting a 3.9L into my 1970 NADA 3500S. The engine I removed was an Oldsmobile, so all of the accessory mounts for that were improvised. The good news was that the DPO (Dreaded Previous Owner) a least threw some of the original brackets into the boot, so I have them.

Issue is the alternator mount. I have the aluminium bracket casting 602369 (p. 11-36 in the parts book) that appears to mount onto the right hand cylinder head. The 3.9L head has three holes in the right place, though on the 3.9 they are all 3/8", whereas apparently one of them in the bracket casting (that mates with the rear mounting ear of the alternator) was originally 5/16" (it has since been hogged out to 3/8").

1. When I place my alternator on the bracket, the front ear of the alternator abuts the front mounting hole of the bracket (and is in front of the bracket), but the rear alternator ear (which has a bushing in it) is about 1/8" shy of meeting the front surface of the rear hole in the bracket. It would seem this could be fixed with washers, but is that how it works? The alternator is Lucas, appears to be original.

2. There is an adjustment arm (for belt tensioning) on the other side of the alternator that apparently mates with an ear coming out of the water pump and front cover. The parts book implies that there is a 1/8" thick washer on that ear, but is it put in front of or behind the adjustment arm?

3. There is apparently a lifting bracket that is also supposed to be mounted on the RH cylinder head. The holes are spaced identically with the top two holes of the aluminium mounting bracket. However, I don't see how the lifting bracket can fit there, it interferes with the alternator.

Or am I completely off-base?

A photo of an older (1970) alternator installation would probably clear things up for me if anyone can do a detail shot.

Thanks for your help!!!

The sleeve moves, so can be pressed through until it meets the bracket.

The washer goes between the bolt head and the adjuster.

The lifting eye doesn't go there.

Ah, all of this makes good sense.

But where does the lifting eye go? I thought that there was one on each side in the front.

No, one each side at the rear, only one at the front, on the bracket that the steady bar fits on to.
