Aerials...

When I bought my series II it had a black plastic aerial on the roof and although at first this didn't bother me it's now the focus of all my hatred. Fortunately the guy I bought the car from gave me a box full of bits, in which was two chrome aerials. Unfortunately they don't fit; the hole in the roof is too small.

Now, is it that I have the wrong aerials for my car or is it that I need to make the hole bigger? I don't want to go cutting into the rust unless I have to...

Hi JP

I have a complete roof panel in my hallway "dont ask!!" Suffice to say I aint married!! :;): The spare bedrooms full of TR6 parts ready to refit!! :p
Come to think of it,the only rooms that dont have any car bits in are the bog and my bedroom :p
Anyhow!!!.the roof hole for an original aerial is............ ####!! cant find a tape!!!! Ah got one!! 12-13mm,and the hole is easy to access!!.it is directly behind the rear view mirror mounting plate . If you have to enlarge it,be extreemly careful you dont rip the roof vynil to shreds.Best use a small file instead of a drill bit!!
Totally original aerials are extreeeeeeeemly rare new,the new ones for sale are good replicas but a bit pricey!!£20-£35!! You can get them at most resto shows for £15 if you search!!
UPDATE!!!!!!!!
Just found my spare aerial with the black mouning on it,it is 15mm :D

I don't know if you're still looking, but I've a cheap original that 'bay

item 250172454239

if let me know the aperture you need, I'll measure if it helps

Thanks for that Paprika, it looks to be the same as one of the ones I already have (although mine looks like it's been chewed by a bored rottweiler...). Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on you point of view) my roof isn't vinyl-coated but it is in line for a re-spray at some point so I’ll probably tweak the hole then and fit a replacement.
