Advice on using my dishwasher to clean my carbs.

I have totally stripped my carbs back to the bare bodies and have cleaned as much gunk as possible from them using paraffin but there are some stubborn bits of muck in some of the nooks and crannies.

Putting aside the potential lingering smell can I use the dishwasher to give them a final clean? Im more concerned about doing some damage to the bodies than the dishwasher (cheaper to replace that than a couple of carbs  ).

Has anyone used this method and if so is it best not to use any detergent and just stick them on the hottest wash cycle?

Not sure how that would work. Theory sounds good.
My main concern would be ensuring all female members of the house are out at the time as they don't understand these issues. I have been in trouble for baking manifolds in the oven after I had painted them.

Years ago, before dishwashers( the electric type) I used to boil carb. parts.
I used washing powder in an old pan, saved for the purpose. After boiling I rinsed in boiling water, and parts dry immediately due to the residual heat.
carbs were cleaned to as new.
So the dishwasher sound ideal, but as Talago suggests, pick your time...........
Jim.

Ive already told the wife what I'm doing

I shall be bunging them in later then. As I say the only concern is the detergent. Would a finiash tablet have an adverse effect on the aluminium?

Hi Mike,

Some detergents will discolour aluminium, especially when the aluminium has not been anodised, as in the case of the carburettor bodies. I use carburettor cleaner, and it works brilliantly. Removes all the hard to get black spots in an instant.

There should be a product that you can source locally that would do the same.

Ron.

In all seriousness Mike , as Ron says their are loads of products out there , I used brake cleaner , contact cleaner will do the same . All of them can send you a little " high " if used in badly ventelated spaces , great fun , until later when you have a thumping head ache  . They will remove all sorts of staining , without even agitating them , Including paint so be warned :!: :D

Hello Folks, I use carb cleaner and wear a mask!! This along with a wire wheel on the outside of the body brings the carb up nice and clean.
Apparently my brother used oven cleaner on some thing in his shed, which in my sister in laws words He is stood in the doorway
of the shed saluting some one!! When asked what he was doing He replied that he was stood on a catering T-Bag saluting the fairies
Whilst on the face of things it sounds very funny. Like Stina he had a thumping headache
for hours after wards. Moon Rover! Kevin. keeping on Rovering

I would use the dishwasher and put some fairy liquid in it instead of the tablets.
Afterwards, an empty run with a regular tablet and a few slices of lemon will have
it back to Madame's satisfaction.

Well I did chuck them in last night but I decided not to use any detergent, I just stuck it on a 65 degree C wash. I had already cleaned most of the gunk off so it was really only a quick rinse but they did come up really well. A couple if stubborn stains will come off with some wire wool. Not as clean or shiny as a professional would achieve but a lot better and good enough for me :D

Both carbs were this dirty.

Wow Mike. They came up pretty good I think :D

If not already done, it may be an idea to run a dishwasher cycle with a tablet, (but no dishes etc...)to make sure it is fully clean again :? :? :?
