Additional Oil Temp Gauge - where does it fit?

Hello fellow Rover drivers,

while constantly enhancing my car i am thinking about installing an oil temp gauge to monitor oil temp and making sure the engine is warmed up properly. The instrument itself is no big deal - i can purchase remanufactured 52 mm round Smith gauges for the task for very little money. But my problem is: Where do i put the gauge in the cockpit? There is obviously no space in the instrument panel (round gauges, V8), but i dont want to cut out pieces from the plastic speaker console either. Any hints or ideas where to put such a gauge? I would prefer to have it in the visible area somewhere, so to put in the glovebox would not be the best idea, i guess...

Hello Olaf,

Given the constraints that you have imposed on placement, a possible alternative might be in the free space alongside the clock. You would need to fabricate a metal housing to locate and secure the gauge beneath the parcel shelf.

Just an

I understand the problem with a round dial instrument pack. I have a couple of suggestions.

1 Place at the extreme left of the vertical wood finisher under the top shroud, rather like the clock placement on a P5B.

2 Place in the dash front rail to the right of the steering column next to the heated rear window switch.

3 Don't use a gauge at all - use a temperature transmitter arranged to switch on a warning light at a particular oil temperature. You could use the choke warning light for this function, as it isn't very usefull to anyone who is mechanically minded enough to be interested in oil temperature!

Hope that helps

Chris
