A suffixes

I was thinking... I don't think I've ever seen an 'A' suffix P6, not even in pictures.

I know that for 1963 & '64 many areas continued to use non-suffix combinations, but I thought this was mainly away from the conurbations, where surely many new P6s were registered. I also would have thought that it must have been better for PR to have the latest designs sporting new-style numbers.

Anyone know any different?

At first I thought you meant chassis plates (and wondered what on earth was going on)... But if you mean numberplates, I have to agree, I don't think I've seen one either.

Hi, I was always led to believe that suffix letters were only issued once all the usual combinations
were exhausted, dealers couldn't request them, they had what they were given just like children.
I can remember seeing suffix 'A' and 'B' regs as a child in the Sussex and Surrey area, some on
Rovers of various flavours.

Some authorities used the A suffix in 1963, but they were not universally adopted until 1965, any unused sequences being issued as age-related plates after that. Prior to the adoption of the prefix in 1983, cars from 1963 or earlier, that had lost their original mark, perhaps due to it having been sold as a cherished number were often issued with an A suffix mark, which is why you sometimes see pre-war cars running round with A suffixes.
