A/C?

How many of you have it? Hows it working for you? My P6 just went in for an R & R of its system and fingers crossed it will work properly. One of the reasons I chose this over the two I was offerred by prior owner was the A/C. I do question the need of a compressor cut off on a V8.

G'Day Oldbloke
Ive had a/c in mine since its birth in "72 . Factory option .
Ive never had any problem with it other than the odd service by a qualified technician .
A re-gas every 4 years [ about $40 NZ ]
The compressor was overhauled last year with new seals and bearings . Technician guy reckons these original rover p6 compressors are bullet proof , as I was considering a later type , thinking newer is better . Not so apparently .
I have a cut off switch on the dash panel .
Some days I like to drive with the window down just to hear the exhaust rumble , so I turn the a/c off .
Apparently it pays to switch the compressor on , even in winter as it keeps the bearings and seals in good condition . Plus the a/c clears the fogged up screen and windows better than the heater . It works great with the heater on - more like a dehumidifier .
I love the a/c and of course the glass is sundym to help keep the heat down in summer . 28deg today so I had it on .
Keeps the dust down in the cabin too , but you already knew that !
Stay cool while you look cool .

Personally...wouldn't have one without it.
Where I live, car is undriveable otherwise.

Only P6 that had a/c came direct from the UK factory , even though the south Pacific area was drawing them from the Nelson plant in NZ .
The salesman that wrote up the order form talked me into a/c and the sundym , as I was living/working in OZ at the time . Always bloody hot !!! Everyday hot !!
In the tropics I was .
Only Rolls Royce and other posh bastards had a/c built in the dash .
All the 70's a/c'd cars in OZ had these monster units that that protruded into the cabin and you wacked ya knees on . Even brand new factory cars had these orrid units welded into the inside . My god they were ugly .
I didn't want that carry on in my rover no matter how hot it was outside .
He also talked me out of leather upholstery and into ambla vinyl .
Best bit of wisdom I took on as a 19yo , as I listened to no one back in the day .
The P6 a/c will never match the modern computer controlled gear we get now , but at least it blows cold , cold and more cold at the turn of a knob .
Stay cool

Hi Gerald.
Yes, that was a wise choice you made!!
The A/c unit on my old Rover, whilst aftermarket, was relatively well integrated...it certainly wasn't one of those horrid knee freezer things.
It sat smack bang in the middle, and essentially looked factory...I flicked the original York boat anchor compressor for a rotary Sanden, and its performance was excellent after that.

Okay! 3rd day with A/C charged! Blowing C.O.L.D.! No leaks found. For some strange reason the compressor cut off on the dash had been disconnected. (maybe someone had my original thought...why would a V8 necessarily need a cut off switch? Towing maybe?)

Thats good news the a/c is up and operational .
Its always a waiting game to see if there are any leaks the re gas guy didn't pick up on .
Hopefully nothing leaking behind the dash if you do get one .
Thinking on that dash switch . If it had been disconnected - then the compressor wouldn't have kicked in anyway , as thats the main trickery feed .
If the previous owner wanted more HP , why not just take the a/c belt off ?
Oh well at least you are one of the cool guys now .
Hey ! Isn't it snowing up your way ?
And you want a/c blowing C.O.L.D !!
Tough bastards you lot , you merkins
Stay cool
Gerald

Hi Gerald, no snow here in California's wine country (maybe a light dusting in the hills occasionally). heres a pic from last week of my Brit stable being aired.

You look like a man that likes to get out and have fun without the pretence .

Even the most modern climatic control systems have an A/C off switch somewhere. It's the same logic that made Rover to include an ON/OFF A/C master switch.
