5speed box gaiter

I need a new gearlever gaiter for my 3500S with an SD1 5 sp conversion. The standard one doesn't do the job as the throw on the gearlever is greater than the standard box and pulls the gaiter out of the centre console. Does anyone have any idea which gaiter will fit? Is it the SD1 part? Or do I have to spend hours at the scrappy with the bits of the old one?
Thanks in advance...

I have the same problem with mine! Currently I have no gaiter as the second one has worn out! All I can do is ask the same question as you!

Have you seen my seperate post under the 5 speed gearbox section? Did you do the conversion yourself? If so did you amend the exhaust slightly to fit the bigger 'box in? :D

I have a 3500 auto and i am looking at converting my car to 5-speed. Could one of you please e-mail me and tell me how you converted the car as i have not been able to find any definate information.

Thanks, Speedy

Mine was already done professionally before I got the car so I'm afraid I don't have any tips on how to do it. From looking at the installation it appears the gearbox cover has been enlarged by cutting out a big chunk and replacing it with a piece of aluminium to which gearbox mounts have been fitted. The filler plug is now very difficult to reach, you can just get a spanner to it and turn it one flat at a time, and you then need a syringe type filler with a long flexible extention to fill it.
Go ahead and do it though, it transforms the car, better acceleration and better mpg.
You'll probably find sourcing an SD1 gearbox and bellhousing may be difficult, I've heard the bell housings are quite sought after.
Does anyone know of a company that does this conversion? They would know which gaiter to use.

hi,
i have done two conversions for people. the first one i used a leather gaitor surround that came off a volvo. fastened it under the centre console with the metal plate you use to fasten the p6 rubber gaitor with. so really any car that just has a leather gaitor will do the job. if your car was an auto with the 5 speed conversion, there is no need for any alteration with the exhaust, you use the auto exhaust that was already on the car. if you have converted a manual car to a 5 speed conversion you cannot use the auto down pipe as the transmission tunnel is in the way. you have to use the manual down pipe, which i saw on a particular car had been extended by a couple of inches just down from the manifold, why i am not sure as both conversions i did were on the autos. so before doing any thing silly with a new down pipe, try it first then alter if necessary. any body want any more help or info ring me on 01302 750747

Thanks for that. I'll try and find a decent leather gaiter at the scrappy. However, the rubber one fitted to the car was glued on, no metal plate, so does anyone have a spare metal plate from a scrapped car? My car is a 1973, if it makes any difference.
