40D engine, weak points ?

a guy offered me a RV8, doesn´t know anything about it. Guided him to make photo from the engine code. It´s a "rare" 4.2 ltr engine with 8.94:1 CR.
Do not need a new engine, but would be a "parallel" long-term project building up an engine with a little bit more cui. Is the 4.2 ltr an engine with more weak points than 3.9 ltrs ? Think, it´s not a crossbolt engine, or ?
Thanks for any information.

Hi Jörg,

The 4.2 litre uses the same block and connecting rods as the 3.9 litre engine, but with different crankshaft and pistons. There were two types of 4.2 litre engines, the earlier ones had no provision for cross bolting whilst the latter engines did. The block on the earlier version was drilled to accommodate 14 bolt cylinder heads, the latter featured only 10 drillings.

With significantly more torque on offer when compared to the 3.5, if you were to put that into a P6B at some point down the line, you'll have a permanent smile :)

Ron.

Hi Ron,
Yes, if so, I would use it for the P6.
I have no good fotos, but it looks like an early version. But, as always, the guy is in the "Triple monkey" mode when you ask something. Km/mls ? Äh, I think not much. Damages ? Äh, I think, no. Price ? Äh, what would you pay ?
We will see

Offer him 25 Euros....... wait for the confusion to dissipate and ask him if he is actually serious or fishing for fools.
If he's serious he will have a minimum price, if he's fishing then he has no idea what he's got and is unqualified to comment on condition.

Obviously he has no idea (offered it simply as " auto motor v8.."). Have flooded him with informations about necessary work on those old engines. He´s now depressed a little bit and thinks about...

So, make him an offer based on what you are prepared to pay for it as an unknown entity.
Alternatively, you can get one of the $20 USB borescopes and have a look in the cylinders for an idea of the condition of the engine and then decide.
