3500 bumper on 2200

I have bought a front bumper for a 3500 to put on my 2200tc, I have looked back at similar threads on this forum and according to the advice given then, it will fit to the car ok.
Does anyone know if the number plate brackets are in the same position on both bumpers so my plate will transfer or do I need new brackets. I cannot get to the car just now to look for myself.
Cheers
Robert

I think you'll find front bumpers are not interchangable between 2200 and 3500. It's the rear bumpers that are the same.

The 3500 front bumper has a cut away section at the bottom due to the larger air intake for the radiator.
The 2200 bumper does not have this, and the fixings themselves are I think in different places.

Hi John,

Alasdair is correct and they are not the exactly the same.

The enlarged V8 air intake means the bumper has a section cut out. also there is only two fixing point where the 4 cyl has four.

If you compare them both it is quite obvious. If you had a V8 bumper then you could fit to a 4cyl but you would need to double check the mounting points. I am sure the outer ones are in the same place.

It isn't impossible to make 4 cyl bumper fit a v8. But you would need to cut a bit out of the bottom and rechrome it.

I'm not too worried about cut out, and if the outer mountings are the same great, but does anyone know for sure. I got the bumper from a customer who bought it new when he had 3500 in the 70's and never fitted it. It was still in wrapper and I was hoping I could use it rather than just selling it.

Hi Robert,

I orginally posted that quote which isn't correct.

There is four mounts on a v8 bumper, the middle two are different. I think the also double as the number plate mounting.

Why don't you unbolt the one on your car and sit it side by side? I did this when I had both v8 and 2200tc.

Without modifying the fixings on the bumper, I believe that you could still fit it to the 2200 using the outside brackets. This would be ok for looks but not for saftey, although you could argue that is is better than a car with no bumpers.

It would be best to either swap it or sell it. If it is brand new and mint you would get a good price, even get your own rechromed with the profits.

Thanks Colin
I cannot get to my car until next week, but I will have a look at the mountings. I will probably take the easier option of selling and using the funds for a good 2200 bumper or re-chroming.

The centre mountings (bumper irons) are different, and because the whole front end is different on a V8 you can't just swap over the irons.
