2000 TC Carbs

Can anyone help me here? I am trying to work out which model of SU carbs my 1972 2000 TC is fitted with and before anyone says it, I do know about the ID tags. Trouble here is that they are missing off my carbs. Here is my problem, the Haynes Manual indicates that the TC should have twin HD8 carbs unless it has emission control (more on that in a moment) and provides a very detailed series of diagrams. Unfortunately my carbs do not match these at all. The supplement then mentions later cars fitted with emission control devices, it doesn't identify the model of carb but does show a simple diagram for adjusting idle speed and mixture/jet height via two screws. This appears to match my car, except that mine does not have the emission control nonsence. I want to identify the carbs so I can order rebuild kits but really don't want to take it off the road until I'm ready to do the work. Any ideas please? Oh should add these are not HIF series SUs which I am very familiar with.

hi steve i also have a 2000tc and not that long ago had the same question. if you check the engine number and what letter is surfix this should help you get the right model of su, if the engine is a 10:1 compresion engine it will most probely be a hs8.the manual tells you what carb for what engine. hope this helps

cheers

Hi steve i too have a 2000tc series one.i had trouble working out which carbs i had.mine is the high compression engine and when i had my carbs rebuilt the guy told me they were hs8s.I found that the manual is,nt much help on these.
cheers steve

Thanks guys, I guess this is yet another example of Haynes manuals being slightly inaccurate. Should have known this really as I've had lots of previous experience with them in the past. I have checked and mine is the 10-1 CR engine and from looking on Gower and Lee's site it does appear that mine has late HS8s.

I have a Burlen SU reference catalogue, and this shows that the HD8 carbs were fitted to the 1966 model.

For a 1972 TC the book shows there were two carb spec's used for that year.

In the USA (1969 - 1974) 4 cylinder with E.C.E, the carb spec's are: AUD 411F & AUD 411R.

For a 1972 TC without E.C.E. (1971 - 1973) the carb spec's are: AUD 533F @ AUD 533R.

Both above are HS8 carb's.

The book shows that you will need to apply to Burlen for the rebuild kit codes as these are not shown in the reference table.

Burlen have a web site www.burlen.co.uk.

Hope above helps.

I am not sure if they are still available, but if they are try and get the "Rover Repair operation Manual" for your model. I was lucky to get one with my 3500s and it is worth its weght in gold. It describes itself as "a guide to the skilled mechanic" but I have found if you read it carefully (and often enough) the message will finally sink in. I had a look at the Haynes Manual at the local public library but it was about the third of the thickness (including its thick covers) but had a fraction of the information which owners would want. Clearly whoever compiled the Rover manual were dedicated to their task. It abounds with instructions such as: " under no circumstances do this" and "we would urge you in the strongest possible terms not to", etc. A legacy of the days when cars were built properly and the manufacturers were proud of their product.
