2 pots same as 3 pots?

hi all. ive got a v8 s1 and need to rebuild the front calipers.i do have a good set of 2000 calipers and the associated discs. and was wondering if i could replace the 3 pot caliper with these 2 pot. i understand that the 2000 and the v8s were of similar weight ,so should these 2 pots be just as (or thereabouts) efficient. would someone be able to offer me some advice on this and also does anyone know where i can get steering bushes and seals in new zealand here or of a website/company that carries rover stocks.
thankyou karl

Hello Karl,

Here in New South Wales and dare I say the whole of Australia, to do that would be illegal. The 3 piston calipers as fitted to the V8 models was done so for a reason, namely the performance of the car is superior to that of the 4 cylinder models. If you were to have an accident, your insurance would be void and you could well end up in serious hot water.

All you need are new pistons and a new seal kit. I appreciate that the pistons are not cheap, but better to pay than to face the consequences!

Ron.

They are interchangeable as I've put V8 3-pots on Bruiser, who had 2-pots as she is a four pot....if you follow. There is quite a bit more swept area on the disc with the bigger calipers & pads so replacing 3-pot with 2-pot calipers would be a very retrograde & unadvisable swap. Not to mention the insurance & legality issues which Ron points out.

Can't you send the calipers to a rebuilder locally in New Zealand. I would never go backwards in caliper size, and swept brake area on any car that I own. If you cant find a rebuilder in New Zealand then send the to Power Brakes in Gilles Plains, South Australia. The should be able to rebuild for about 100 dollars per caliper. Alternatively I think that the caliper is the same type as an E type Jaguar. You can get a seal kit from Oregon USA for 15 dollars. You would also need a set of hone stones to hone out the bores. If there is corrosion you may need to replace the pistons.

Here is the link for the seal kit:

Just let them know what the number is on the casting that you have so they can confirm that this cross reference is correct.

excellent ,thanks guys will not bother and just get the pistons and seals and be done with it,i admit the brakes are very efficient (a good thing!) cheers karl
