Those prices look pretty similar to today! You would expect at least a ten-fold increase if not twenty, since the early 70s on most prices. Fuel pumps taking 50p coins, 7p or 9p bags of chips & average houses I'm guessing at say £7k 'up north'.

I could buy brand new rear calipers for £12 each at the start, then they rose to £15, and then £20....

You're right Phil, but the wholesale shift of manufacturing of almost everything we buy to the Far East over the last 20-30 years has kept inflation artificially low. It's starting to creep up again now as those Far Eastern workers demand higher wages and a better standard of living although this will ultimately force production to move again.

"What goes around comes around.." our grandchildren will probably be working in new UK factories of the future!

Does anyone still use Champion spark plugs ? I used them once in a motorbike and they were crap.

I remember my Dad complaining when petrol hit £1 per gallon.

So did I......

I can remember blokes I was working with at the time saying that petrol would never go above £1 a gallon because the pumps weren't capable of calibrating at that level. Well that problem was soon solved with all new pumps......

Yep still use Champions but just a notch up in the heat range on my 9.25:1 engine using 91 RON fuel.

I can still remember the days when petrol was 34 cents a gallon in the late 60's , didnt seem so expensive to run our 1955 Humber Super Snipe with is frugal when tuned 17 MPG and 14 when not

Not the 70s in this pic I'm afraid, but the late 60s.....petrol at 4/10 a gallon....that's a hefty 5.37p per litre.

And yes....I can just about remember that!

I first went to live, for a while, in New Zealand in 1962. Their £ was par with the Sterling £ at the time. Petrol was 2/6 a gallon i.e. 8 gallons for £1, or about sixpence a liter. Amazing what was just half a crown there then- 20 cigarettes, a pound of butter, best seats at the flicks are just some of them. Might have been because N.Z. had a half crown coin then.

I bought a 1930 OHC Morris Minor for £45. Drivers licence was 5/- per year. Warrant of Fitness (Roadworthy Certificate) was a six month affair and cost 5/- a time. I can't remember registration costs but think it might have been about £4/10/- per year.
