18 ACR

Hi all . Out and about yesterday the ignition light didn't want to go out fully . The ammeter is behaving normal , but the light stays on , as you rev it it goes dimmer but wont go out completely . Reading The Rovering Members thread on ignition lights it looks as if the rectifier is at fault . I replaced the alternator a few months back with a unknown quality spare i had and it has lasted a while but now it looks like time for a new one . I know you can buy the individual parts and rebuild them DIY but my soldering skill are very much "wanting" . I'd end up with a load of burnt parts and a soldering iron driven into the back of the garage door in frustration
So , can someone point me in the right direction , or link to the correct one for the later V8 ( It's a mine field of them on ebay )
Oh . Also put the volt meter on the battery when i got back . 13.2 volts with the motor off , 13.9 with it running , if that means anything to any one :?: :D

dont forget the range rover ones can be made to fit and are a much higher wattage with all the electrics built in. You can get them for about £40-50. Only thing is you may have to turn it to be other handed but that's not too difficult...

something like this?

On a series one you then run a wire from the ignition light to the back of the alternator. I have the schematic somewhere.

Understand if you want to keep it original but knowing your battery is topped up on winter nights is good in my book!

I'm looking for a direct replacement Rich , will that one go straight on a series 2 without the wire to the light mod :?: :D

Stina,
The "warning light mod" is nothing more than joining two of the wires on the warning light relay, I'll have to check the colours,
but you don't use the black one (earth).
Jim.

Thanks appreciate that . But isn't there one that will just swap straight on without any modding ?

One mine it's actually from the back of the warning light. I'll check the circuit diagram! it's all external on an s1 where i think it's different on an s2/ACR alternator?

Rich

Just had a look at the diagram and it looks like cars with 18ACRs already have the lead from the warning lamp at the back of the dash.

Thinking about it chewbacca should have an 18acr so i could go and photograph the wiring.... Hold the line caller!

Rich

OK, checked out chewbacca and the wiring diagram. The connections for the range rover alternator are all there. The only thing I'm unsure about is the ammeter connection. Surely someone else must have done this on a later car?

13.9 is too low, should be 14.4 to an absolute maximum of 15.0 however was your 13.9 recorded at idle? if it was then 13.9 is what you should expect to see but at higher RPM expect it to climb fast to 14.4 thereabouts.
Another proviso is the current state of charge in the battery if its flat the battery terminal voltage will be less than the ideal but in your case with it switched off and it sitting at 13.2 it would indicate a fully charged battery.
There are 2 places to measure the alternator output volts 1, directly at the back of your ACR as this will give you the true condition of the output volts and 2, at the battery which compared to place 1 will give you a good indication of the health of your cars wiring to the battery.

You will have the plastic plug on an ACR alternator should be fine.

The early AC delco.units had external regulator etc.

The later alternators are all part of the same family I think A118/A120 , i forget but basically any maestro/ escort and more from 80's use the same unit with various outputs.

Depending on the orignal source you may need to rotate the casing to get it mounted correcrtly.

I swapped out the 11ac on my p5 with a new old stock maestro item of slight higher output for £30 delivered. Top tip when rotating the casing remove brushes and you wont break them like I did.

Some of the MG/mini suppliers will have 18acr units if you are keen to keep one.

In the end i just got one from Wins , trawled ebay and phoned a few suppliers , I wasn't really confident as i didn't understand why the extra terminal for the brown wire was missing off all of them . Any hoo , when it turned up this one had no terminal , when i rang and asked why i was told that is deleted and not important , tape it up and tie it back , so i could of got one from any where . Oh well , sorted now , all seems o'k :D
