    NADA HS8 Question

Thanks for your responses. The throttles were fine, so I narrowed it down to the jets not coming up high enough (over an eighth of an inch below flush). I solved the problem by removing something called the "compensator tab" from each carb. Although it's pictured in the NADA supplement, no...

    NADA HS8 Question

Here is an update on my carb situation. I installed them easily enough, and the car started right up, which is unlike it. The new problem is that the idle is around 2400, and none of the adjustments have any effect, i.e. the jet and idle adjustments do nothing. It's possible that I...

    NADA HS8 Question

Thanks for the lead. I thought my 3-Litre was the rare one here, but at least it has a plain old HD8. Gordon.

    NADA HS8 Question

Thanks for your replies. For what it's worth, I've been able to center the jets by loosening the bolts that hold the guide in and moving the guide around until the pistons fall freely. It's been a surprise and a disappointment to learn how rare are the parts for these carburettors. My usual...

    NADA HS8 Question

Here is a view of the jet prior to replacement. Note that the adjustment is done remotely, but a screw up top, rather than directly via a big nut, as on most HS carbs. You can also see the compensator, that big disk just above the spring. By the way, only some Rolls Royces and some Jaguars...

    NADA HS8 Question

Obviously a dud of a topic, but I have found that the XJ6 of the early '70s used the same HS8, including the compensator. I've decided to keep the compensators because the manual supplement I have assumes them as part of tuning, etc. I'll post a picture here, if that's allowed. Gordon.

    NADA HS8 Question

Hello, I've just done a minor rebuild of the HS8 carbs on my NADA 1968 TC--just cleaning, replacing jets, needles, and gaskets. The HS8 isn't covered in the WSM, but I have a special supplement for US cars. These HS8s have a "jet compensator" that keeps the jet from going too high, a...

    Difficult Cold-Starting

Hello, Time to revive this thread, I'm afraid. My father has been driving my TC for the past year but has had increasing trouble starting it, and can't start it at all now that winter has settled in. I'm contemplating installing an electric fuel pump (I have one I bought for my P5 but didn't...

    Tachometer Reading Double

Thanks guys. The consensus seems to be a recalibration, with an eye toward old connections, solder, etc. I'll have to find a place in the U.S. that does that work. Gordon.

    Running Cool

Thanks all for your responses. Since I last wrote I've replaced the thermostat, finding the old one to be ruptured in the housing. This obviously was a good move, but the gauge still read cool. I sent away for, and installed, a new temperature sensor, and that did the trick. Gordon.

    Tachometer Reading Double

The tachometer in my 1968 NADA 2000 TC has read roughly double since I bought the car five years ago. My father now drives the car, and I'd like to resolve the problem for him. Any thoughts about what could cause such a problem? Thanks, Gordon.

    Running Cool

Well, it seems we have a consensus--thanks. I'm heading to my dad's house on Sunday (the Super Bowl, don't you know)and will change the thermostat then. I'll let you know the result. Gordon.

    Running Cool

Hello, Back with my 1968 NADA-Spec TC. It's run on the cool side since I got it five years ago, including not generating much heat via the heater. The temperature gauge never gets into the normal range. I've been satisfied with that as long as it otherwise was running well, but my elderly...

    TC Choke

The choke is connected, just seems to bind somewhere. I'm getting a new one, though.

    TC Choke

Gents, I recently posted about my difficulty with cold starting on my NADA 1968 TC. I found that the problem was that the chokes weren't opening enough, and that when I adjust the cable so that they do, the car starts right up. The problem now is that once I push the choke cable in, it binds...

    Difficult Cold-Starting

Thanks again to all who responded to this thread. I feel I owe you an update, no matter how embarrassing to me. It turns out that the problem was simply that the chokes weren't adjusted properly, and the carb's weren't getting enough fuel when the engine was cold. Very logical, but it took me...

    TC Parts Cache in U.S.

For what it's worth, my 1968 TC came with a vast stash of used spares, including body parts (no wings or sills, alas), interior bits, and various other mechanical parts, including an engine. As we all know, they aren't really worth anything except to another owner who's desperate. In the...

    Difficult Cold-Starting

Many thanks to all who responded. You've given me some leads and ideas. My first step will be to rebuild the fuel pump because that''s the one significant element (the carbs and the ignition system being the others) I haven't yet addressed. By the way, does anyone know if the fuel pump from a...

    Difficult Cold-Starting

I'm in the U.S. with a NADA-spec 1968 TC. It runs fine despite unleaded fuel, and starts well when warm. Cold starts, however, are laborious, often taking over a minute, even if the weather isn't very cold. Even when it catches, it will spit and sputter for 30 seconds or so before finally...
