ok not strictly V8 engine issue, but their is a V8 their
My wiper delay does not work so was taking heater box out anyway so lets have a closer look, the set up does not look right, looks like a panel pin holding the spring in place surely not..................................

secondly when the wipers are switched on the plastic block on the slider gets stuck and cant return, is this the problem ? anyone any ideas

That's half of your problem. The vacuum mechanism needs adjusting so that the wedge can't slip past the plunger. The panel pin and spring is a red herring and doesn't do much as the plunger should push the wedge back down.

Inside the vacuum delay there are some electical contacts which open and close with each sweep, they're probably dirty and not connecting properly. Also there's a one way valve in that small circle on top of the vacuum delay. It's a rubber flap held shut by some foam (probably disintegrated) all held in place by a bent bit of metal. Clean it out, replace the foam and bingo - self parking, intermittant wipers!

ahhh did change the foam a while back made no difference, but didnt clean any contacts, while h/box is out will do that now. Is that it ie thats how you adjust the mechanism ? cheers Paul

It's a lot easier with the heater out of the way. I changed the foam to lengthen the delay in mine last weekend with everything in situ - not easy.

After you've cleaned the contacts, I'd recommend fitting a relay to reduce the current through the little brass contacts. I went through a period of cleaning mine every few weeks or so (much easier to get at in a 2000), but eventually got sick of the current burning them out when they were half open.

Here's a snap of how I did. You basically just turn the vacuum unit into a momentary SPST switch, leaving the relay to do all the hard work.

The three spade connectors from the old setup go across pins 87, 87a and 30. 85 is fed by blue wire from permanently live positive feed via washer motor wires (green wires), brown wire from 86 goes to one contact on the vacuum unit, the other contact is left blank, and the common contact is grounded to earth (confusingly with a red wire!). Simples!

Took it apart cleaned all up and tested. Now the wipers go up and won't return unless you switch them off. It's progress as they did nothing before. When I cleaned the contacts it was sitting touching the bottom one permanently. I have it touching the top permanently at moment with the result above. Any ideas

If the delay is too short it doesn't give the wiper motor enough time to cycle before the power is cut and the wipers stop in the middle of the screen.

There should be plenty of images on the forum of the correct set-up. I know I've posted a few. Trouble is they probably get hidden in a different thread because the original thread has changed direction
