Wiper Motor

Hi All, Yesterday I used the car in the rain, wipers ran fine no problem. Stopped car and then when I jumped back in, started engine, turned wipers on, they went half way across screen and then stopped. Fuse had gone. Changed fuse, worked fine the rest of the day.

Driving to work today, wipers doing their job, no problems. Stop car, run to shops, restart car, turn on wipers, half way across screen and stop - fuse blown again.

Any ideas ?

EEK! that sounds like one of those unique problems, how lucky for you. I haven't had this problem on a P6 but have had something similar on one of the old Beetles after fitting a 2 speed wiper motor, on that it was dirt build up on the contacts inside the motor causing it to draw more power on start up which the fuse didn't like and after a clean up and a quick skim on the commutator on the lathe all was ok, not sure if this helps but hope all turns out well.
Good luck.

Hello Thomas,

As far as I am aware, they are not the same. Is your motor mounted on the RHS beneath tha valance? There were three motors and two types of drive mechanism fitted to the V8 cars.

Ron.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the advice. Looks like i will have to be careful when sourcing a replacement. Maybe best to remove the old one first to see it i can see a part number. It is located under the valance on the right.

Regards

Thomas.

Hi Thomas,

Does it look like this?

When you say the right hand side - is that sitting in the driver's seat a la Haynes? Or looking under the bonnet from the front of the car?

Cheers,

EDIT: Sorry Deadstar...didn't mean to hijack your thread! I'll repost this in the Wanted section.

That looks like the one Thomas. A bit of a pain to get the cable/tubing past the heaterbox in one piece IIRC though, looks like that seller may have bent the tubing slightly doing so. Worth giving the cable a good clean and regrease before refitting too.

Hi again Thomas,

I refurbed my wiper motor recently and fitted a new delay governor and rubber mounts. It's not too bad a job refitting the rack, just take it gently and rotate the wheelbox cogs and it should slide in. And as Peter says, get plenty of grease on the cable...and as a side effect...your hands too!

Just a thought...are you sure it is the motor that's the problem? I assume you've checked whether you've got power to it?

Hi,

Yes its definately the motor thats the problem. I took it down to the garage yesterday to have it tested and there is definately a power source. Bought a new one so hopefully i will be able to install it this weekend.

Found a large puddle of black muck under the rear axle this morning. Gods knows what gone wrong now!

Salty road sludge?? That's what cars drop here these days!

Is it possible take the cable out of the wiper motor??

As far as I remember you just remove the cover plate and the end of the cable just lifts off of the peg on the driven gear.
