Which electronic ignition?

Good morning,
I was looking at improving the original Lucas distributor on my car somewhat by fitting electronic ignition - the plan is to fit one that's completely hidden by the dizzy cap.

Which AFAIK means it's got to be either the Lumenition Magnetronic or the Aldon Igniter module, presumably both with a new coil.

Does anyone here have any experience with either? Which one would you recommend?

Thanks,

Timo

My P6 has Lumenition, and it always starts first time, no trouble. I recommend it.

My P5B had the Lumenition fitted when I bought her 20 years ago & she's never missed a beat. Happily, our new P6B also had it fitted when we bought her. Saves us paying for it. ;)

Thanks guys - is that the Optronic (with the external module) or the magnetronic that just fits inside the distributor?

I've had Lumenition optical-type system since 1986 I think. The external module is not big, and is tucked somewhere in the engine compartment. I cannot recall it ever giving trouble in 160,000 miles of driving.

My car has the Optical Lumenition with a little additional box mounted on the inner wing near the coil, a simple but effective system, hasn't failed yet (...knock on wood!).

Optical Lumenition fitted in my MGB V8, which gets hot as h*** even in Scotland but it has survived trips to France in the summer - been on the car 15 years ...... only down side is if it does let go looking at a tow home....

;)

I've used an ALDON ignitor which is similar to magnetronic. The advantage is that it fits insde the distributor with no external box. The aldon kit is also a bit cheaper than the optronic but best check.

I had trouble with the aldon kit and the rev-counter though which didn't occur with a pervious lumenition set up.

Main hassle with all of them is you need to provide an unballasted live feed. I took one from the fuse box and threaded it through the main loom grommet under the wiper motor. Maybe there is a better source for the feed??
