weak brake lights

Hi all,

the only time my brake lights come on is when i apply alot of pressure on to the brake pedal.Obviously under normal driving and normal braking they're not coming on and i fear its only a matter of time before someone rear ends me.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

My first thought would be the brake light switch. As it is operated by the pressure in the system, if it develops a fault the pressure required to operate it can increase.

If I recall correctly, the brake light switch on the P6 is set into the hydraulic line and is actuated by an increase in brake pressure. this was common on cars of that era. The problem is, if you have to replace a defective brake light switch, you have to end up bleeding the system after replacement. Some cars had a switch independent of the brakes, which makes replacement simple.

Replacement is the only way they aren't designed to be stripped and repaired. You can get away with bleeding at the next union down the line, and if you replace the switch quickly you won't get a great deal of air in the system.
