valve and plug on the side of the crankcase?

I was rolling around on the ground investigating a leak on my '65 p6 rover 2000 and spotted what seems to be a drain valve and next to it a plug that seems to go into the crankcase on the drivers side, (attached) it appears that they would be too high up on the crankcase to be to drain any engine oil. what are they for?
