V8 Engine Overhaul

Hello,

i have a very good P6 V8 Engine which will go into my MGB GT. Before that a complete engine overhaul is due. The overhaul will be done by an engine specialist shop. Which parts would you replace or rebuild? Is it feasible to buy a complete "overhaul kit" somewhere like the one rimmer bros. is offering? Can somebody point me to alternate source for the necessary parts to overhaul the engine?

Any help is appreciated.

Hello Olaf,

Replace camshaft bearings, main and big end bearings and rocker assemblies. New camshaft and lifters and of course new piston rings. The quality of parts currently available for the Rover V8 varies widely, so you will need to source parts carefully. Some of the aftermarket rocker assemblies for example are of very poor quality, so be careful. If you have a choice of OEM or pattern parts, buy OEM even if the cost is more than double as they will more than likely save you time and money in the long run.

Just to add to what I wrote above,...the main and big end bearings will need to be chosen dependent upon whether the crankshaft journals require grinding or just a polish.

With the timing set, avoid the OEM morse type for a roller chain setup with steel timing wheel. The latter will prove to provide far greater long term durability and ensure that the camshaft timing remains fairly stable for a considerably longer period of time.
