V8 auto Tacho duff or curable?

I had the car out for a run this afternoon just to run the fluids round, and whilst shifting up and down the box I noticed: 2.5k on the tacho in top, floor for kick down, the car accelerates, engine note went up, rev counter went down proportionately, back off rev counter comes back up. Tacho works normally at any other time except when giving the loud pedal a booting. Is this a known and curable trait, is the clock knackered, or have I been accelerating so fast I have managed to bend time?
Just curious as I've never had this happen to me before.
Please don't get all technical sparky patois on me, as I made a decision to resolutely avoid any thing to do with such Dark Magic after my old man tried to teach me. His lesson involved a magneto off a Coventry Climax and me jumping up and down and swearing.

A lot.

Then my ear hurt for swearing, I was only 10.
I had an interesting childhood

Very curable, not seen that symptom but invariably it will be either a solder joint or 1 duff componant.

Mmmm, Sounds like bang in the spare one, and if it works break out the soldering iron and multimeter for open heart surgery on the excised one. A voyage of discovery awaits Dr John.

Any further clues for your intern to look for? :?

Or!!!

If you have still got the Coventry Climax magneto, you could sell it and
pay someone to repair it for you.

Sadly the Mag went years ago, as with most things, if my Old Man found someone in need of a part they went for free, or in a swap for something useful to whatever project he was playing with at the time. At one time in the late 50's every one we knew had a wooden tool box from Leyland Octopusses (Octopi?) as they were not allowed on fuel tankers. A couple of local trailers had modified winches from 2nd World War bombers etc. I remember 4 crated Morris MO engines that he was 'going' to marineise for a boat, (He bid on one and found he had bought 4) being swapped for a weird American marine gearbox and a Kitchen? rudder. Life was never boring as a kid, but I learnt not to become too attached to things as they were always being moved on.
He had an old school value ethic, something similiar to this forum, not everything requires a monetary worth, sometimes helping someone who is in a bind is enough.
