UK Road Tax exemption

Interesting article in CCW this week - apparently the Tories have stated that they recognise that the current policy needs looking at - and they will restore the rolling tax exemption at 38 years old, a year at a time, which means that 1973 build P6's would theoretically become tax free at the end of this year if they come to power, 1974 following on the next year etc. etc.

There's nothing on the Conservative manifesto about this, I had previously been researching it.

This is a different proposition from the one I'd heard they'd earlier floated at the FHVC - which was rolling historic tax for everything over 30 years old, with everyone paying £50 a year per car.

I think the second one would have caused some pain as you can imagine what Morris Minor owners etc. would think, as all their cars are all tax free.

Theoretically good news for us late model owners - HUC was built in December 1974 so would would supposedly follow next year.

Cheers

There's an all party parliamentary motor group that deals with this subject in particular. I seem to remember that it's fronted by Leslie Phillips (I say, Ding Dong!!!).

I believe David Steele runs a P5. He's rallied one.

It would have caused pain for anyone who currently gets a free disc. Two of our cars are 1975, the rest pre '73.

I'd still be better off, just. If I have three classics they'd cost me £150, as against just my 2200, which I tax all year round at £180....

Still, I'd certainly go with the rolling tax coming back. Cause for celebration for several friends of mine with 1973 cars!

Cheers

Imagine how many went on the scrappage scheme that would be kicking themselves if that came back in :p
Amazing how many of my customers won't own a car that needs Tax paying :)

Or even how many people will go to some considerable effort to fake a tax exempt car to get the free disc!

There were two P6's at Weston at Easter that have been treated thus (2200's are very obvious - the rear cross member from a V8 and a four cylinder engine?...it's a 2200!).

I cannot see the point - how can you want to show your car off when you know it's not what it's supposed to be...

i totally agree with u there Nick

Worst one I've seen was the sad story of a friend of mine's VIP, which he sold in about 2003.

This car was sighted at a show a couple of years ago with 'J' plates on it...

So - you have a VIP, one of the rarest and most interesting P6's - and you disguise it as something else to save you a couple of hundred quid a year. Not good really.

I suppose as long as the owner likes it that's the main thing, maybe it wouldn't have survived on its own ID? A scrapper may have helped it live on? Who knows :) But when you mention VIP, that is a different ball game to me :?
