Triplex glass roof

Wow! Pricey but who wouldn't pay that for such a startling item! I prefer a fixed roof, but if my P6's were museum standard I'd really WANT that!

Worldwide survival rate from memory is something like 2 in the US, and either 2 or 3 in the UK!!!

If that was in the UK, id go and look at that and have a good punt. £500/£600 not expensive if you think what a webasto revinyled will set you back and this is so much more desirable to have. When I had the roof off of mine, apart from being driven up and down the yard doing Hitler impressions, I liked the light it gave. Such a glass roof would be superb ... I did hear of one in a blokes yard out Watford way, but dont know how much truth there was in it, and I suspect it would not have been for sale anyway.

My 2000Tc once had a triplex roof I was told. Originlly sold new in Belgium, the car came back to the UK in a container of spares bought by a UK based P6 specialist,. Decided car was too good to take apart for spares, but did remove the roof and put on another P6. Car was then sold to someone else who drove her for a few years. I then spotted her advertised in the UK - bought her and she is back in Belgium.

Blimey! That's some item to find on there. Haven't been looking on ebay recently as I just buy stuff when I do. Wonder how much to have it shipped to the U.K? Temptation, get behind me. Theres a recession on the way.

Not quite Richard! I suspect it was just a bit too avant guarde for Rover customers plus rather expensive. I can't imagine it can have been very easy to make either. One of the UK survivors is known to me and the owner has had huge problems keeping the Perspex glued into the roof frame. I presume this is typical, in which case I imagine the roof was deleted fairly quickly, whatever catalogues might say, in order to avoid warranty costs!

Chris

That's interesting Is it really only Perspex ?

Does anyone remember BL producing a Princess (Wedge) or Ambassador with a glass roof / tailgate and I think the glass actually flexed .It had some name like 10-20
I think this was only ever a concept car

If you'd like to have a look at a 10-20 try http://www.leylandprincess.co.uk/Princess1020.htm

Having another look at the Ebay add for the glass roof prompted me to revisit James Taylor's book on the P6. The roof was announced in Oct '69 and Taylor reckons it was withdrawn from sale some time in '71 or '72. He also surmises that no more than 12 were sold. And yes the roof is definitely GLASS.

Chris

Hmm, wonder if that would be covered by your car insurance "glass cover", can't see it being easy to find a replacement !

Looks like there isn't really enough overlap between the frame and the glass for a good bond, I guess this predates a lot of bonded windscreens etc, still a good modern windscreen adhesive should do the job.

I think part of the problem will be the amount of flexing it gets in use, the roof frame (both the car part and the roof part) aren't particularly strong, with the roof removed you can twist them by hand. Nothing like the massive structures you see on modern cars. Add to that any flexing imposed by bolting it to the frame.
