top end rattle

Hi, I hope someone might recognise these symptoms!
2000sc with74000 miles,has regular oil changes with 15\40
mineral oil, has a scratchy ,light rattly noise from vicinity of
inlet manifold, sounds like you could stop it with your finger in right place.doesnt sound like cam noise, increases slightly with
revs, any clues please?

I have had this on two 2000 P6's. Unbolt the carb and inside the exposed bit of the inlet manifold you'l find a metal tube which is supposed to either be an interference fit or glued in. This comes loose and give that annoying rattle. Solution is to stick it back in position with a little araldite or superglue. Don't get any glue where it shouldn't go! This has fixed the problem for me in the past. Anyone know what would happen if this bit was removed?

I would agree its the metal tube, I took mine out 10 years ago to seemingly no detriment.
