The most rotten P6 ever?

Have finally started the stripdown of my P6 resto, and am amazed it has past an MoT at all in the last 10 years! The D posts that the previous owner spent hundreds having repaired were welded on top of the old ones, I've got sill patches on top of patches on top of patches and my rear arches need some metal!
Is it possible to remove the D posts intact so I can reuse them after repair.
Also, were do you advise I start
arches, sills or d posts
Help!!!!!

You should be able to cut the D posts off without loosing too much metal, I guess it depends whether there will be enough metal left to weld them back onto afterwards. You can always make small extra sections to fill any spaces.

I would start with the sills and see how bad they are before tackling the rest.

To be hoped its not as bad as Hermione !!! :D

Those pictures give me renewed hope for the welding project ahead of me this spring.
I guess it is good that my P6 has been off the salty roads for more than a decade

don't think mine is quite as bad as yours hermione, better is some areas, worse in one or two, i'll send you some pics of it later today.
Is there any way of posting pics in my message?
Thought sills might be the place to start, probs best to add a bit of strength to the shell

i started with the inner floor area first, especially if your car looks like Deardrie (car in pics, hermione is the one in my avatar, and yep i have names for all my cars ),this will give you something to weld too as the sill fits over the floorpan,(looking from underneath),..

Yes, a very brave man. The rust shown is to say the least, horrific. Clearly it is a result of the UK practice of putting salt on the roads. I know some very determined car restorers in NZ but they would give up in despair if they saw some the pictures posted on this forum. However, good luck and I now knowthe reason why so many UK enthusiasts have welding skills.

I have to say that given the state of the rust, running the engine is the least of JC's problems :p
I have always had the good fortune here in Australia to be able to start with reasonably solid cars to restore. The worst one I have done required 4 days of welding because it had been in an accident!!!

Cheers

The worst P6 I have ever seen had done an excellent impression of a tin can in a salt mine!! The power steering box was hanging on by a thread, the heater box was lace curtains, the differential didn't need much encouragement to fall out, you could even sit inside the car, and put your feet on the ground!! :O

The funniest part of it all, was the car had never, ever, seen a welding torch in it's life!

The weldathon continues! Have spotted some rot around the top link outer mount point(I can infact fit my fist through the hole!) can I take this off without removing the front road spring? The Rover workshop manual suggests i can to change the bush.
Thanks in anticipation
Nick
