Taking over ownership from my sibling.

Hi All,

A little while back my brother (D16 PJM - Pete) posted the pics of his newest acquisition, a 1971 P6 in Zircon Blue. You may have noticed that he advertised it on Ebay shortly after. Anyway, there was a genuine reason for this, he was taken ill and as he had just changed jobs he received no sick pay. Thus the car had to go.

Now I had seen the car at our parents and taken it round the block (twice because I liked it so much) but was not really in the market for a classic car. I also had a holiday coming up so could not really afford it. Anyway, long story short, seeing it advertised made me realise I would quite like to own it., so I bought it from him on the promise of giving him first refusal if I sell.

I have had a few classics before, the last being a Morris traveller. I sold it cheap just before values soared.

The Rover is on another level. Great to drive, really comfortable, and the same age as me. What is a bonus is my 14 year old son has been out helping me fettle it, we added the rear belts that were in the boot and cleaned out the washer bottle and pipes. It still has the vibration at about 50 mph, we greased the front UJ and had a look at the other joints, but I think this weekend we will swap the wheels round as the vibration only comes form the back, so we may be able to eliminate the tyres.

We took the car to Newbury show ground this weekend, there was a classic rally in aid of a Cancer charity. It was a really good family day out, the car got lots of positive comments too. I am in the Oxford area so may try to get to the Buckinghamshire railway centre in a couple of weeks time.

Right, must stop rambling now,
Mike

Hello Mike. Glad the car is staying in the family. Also, do hope the vibration is as simple as an unbalanced tyre/s.
Good also that your son is interested and helping. I have tried to get my 16 year old boy interested without much luck. However, his two younger brothers do take a bit of interest and I am hoping at least one of them can become a junior P6 mechanic. :). Please keep us posted on how you get on.

Mike, I found some pic's of your car on one of Pete's posts:- http://www.classicroverforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=16765

I had vibration from rear of my car (at about 50-60mph IIRC). I found out that this was due to the differential rear not being properly connected to the mounting plate which hangs down from he boot floor. The diff is connected to the plate by 3 bolts. I discovered my problem when the diff basically fell off one day! However, the vibration I got was not like the normal shuddering you get from an unbalanced wheel/tyre, it was more like a constant grinding vibration/buzzing.

I think Rockdemon is referring to the mounting bushes that connect the diff mounting plat to the boot floor.

Hi Mike,

That is one lovely car, and a great colour too. Welcome to the wonderful world of P6 ownership ;)

mounting bushes that connect the diff mounting plat to the boot floor.

and also the one at the front of the diff - leaky diffs kill the rubber on the mounts....

Thanks for the welcome, and the advice on the vibes. I hope to get it in the air this weekend.

The longer term plan is to use for shows and stuff and just continually improve bits as I go. A slight problem which did emerge last weekend will need dealing with. My wife seemed to like it so much that I hardly drove it at all.............

Hopefully this will be remedied next weekend when we take it to the Bucks railway centre, may see some of you there.
Once I get my head round posting pictures I will put some up.
Mike

Hi Mike,

Welcome!

I recently found an old picture that I took of your car. It was taken around 1993 at a South East Rover rally I attended.

Wow, that's a great picture. It looks very similar to pictures I took this week, it is hard to believe that there is about a 20 year gap.

Come to think of it, I feel old all of a sudden.

Cheers for posting this up!!
Mike
