Tachometer Reading Double

The tachometer in my 1968 NADA 2000 TC has read roughly double since I bought the car five years ago. My father now drives the car, and I'd like to resolve the problem for him. Any thoughts about what could cause such a problem?

Thanks,

Gordon.

Hi Gordon,

I only have this problem in my 1971 TC during very hot weather. I must admit that my suspicion is that it is a breakdown of the internal components due to your cars advancing years, particularly the capacitors I believe, which can be professionally repaired by one of the many repair shops that can be found online.
JDO Instuments rings a bell, but I've never used them http://www.jdo10.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ I suspect other forum users will have other suppliers, hopefully with some "I've used them and they did a good job" type of recommendation.

Best of luck,
Bri.

Our P5B's tacho reads high. And Bruiser's tacho recently started working of it's own accord but reading high too, though an accurate lucas 2" was fitted to the car when I bought her so I now have two working tacho's to look at.
I think they're well known for it though & you have to have them re-calibrated professionally as Brian says.

I have repaired many tacho's over the years and other dash/ instrument electronics, most of the time its just dry solder (cracked solder) joints on the PC board but having said that I dont recall ever fixing a P6 tacho.

** Edit** and if so, no recalibration will be required

Speedy Cables also do instrument repairs. I used them to fix the speedo and fuel gauge on my Volvo 740 and the did an excellent job in just 3 days turnaround.

Thanks guys. The consensus seems to be a recalibration, with an eye toward old connections, solder, etc. I'll have to find a place in the U.S. that does that work.

Gordon.
