Starting problems.

Hello all. My car starts fine from cold, within 5 seconds it's purring nicely. However, take it for a run and try and start it and it doesn't want to know. It will eventually with the foot on the floor. Is this normal? (I'm new to Rovers) Many thanks.

I've had the same problem, and if you look on previous threads so have others.
Mine was cured by fitting an electric fuel pump and as we speak my carburettors are being stripped and overhauled at Southern Carbs in Wimbledon. Fingers crossed this will be the end of my poor running problems.

Mechanicla fuel pumps, like all parts wear out and there is the fuel vapourisation problem, again covered at length in previous threads.

Good luck with getting yours running.
Dave

Beaser,
could also be carbs flooding when stopped (needle/flow valve not seating properly) cured by flooring the throttle when starting or leaving 'til some fuel evaporates.
Suggest fit new needle valves / carb overhaul kits.
Regards, John.

Just to add to my previous entry, I 've just collected my 3500s this morning from having the carbs done and it's a different car. From a useless heap that wouldn't always run, and when it did it ran unevenly and kept stalling to a smooth running dream.

Costly though, I had a new facet electric fuel pump fitted and the carbs refurbished, all done professionally as I've no mechanical experience to the tune of the best part of £600, ouch :( . It's time I learnt how to do a few of these jobs myself.

However I do seem to have a different car now, so worth it.

Maybe that's what you need !

Thanks all. I've given her a rather good seeing to, ie plugs, points, condenser and air filters. I think the fuel may have been a bit off as it was sat for a while, but after my tinkering, it's running a lot better apart from being a bit rich. I'll tackle that next week. £600 for a carb overhaul? ??? I'll get back to reading the manual. :D

The timing was retarded, and the mixture at about 10% so sorted them and slowed the tickover. Running sweet as a nut, but the linkage between the carbs is a bit worn. Anyone know a supplier that can give me new bits? Cheers all.

I'd recommend Southern Carburettors in Wimbledon.I used them recently and were impressed with their attitude, service, workshop was clean and well equipped overall they were very helpful.

Unfortunately I had to have my carbs completely reconditioned which cost me a grand total of £486, due to my lack of mechanical knowledge and their labour rate of £50 per hour.

The parts involved spindles, needles, jets, gaskets new contact set and condensor came to £186 with £300 labour (ouch).

The car however hasn't run so well and not missed a beat since.

Their website is www.southerncarbs.co.uk

The engineer who worked on my car is an ex P5 owner and stated that he was as happy as a "pig in s*it" working on my 3500 s.

Worth a look at their website.

Dave.

Worth bearing in mind that, thanks Dave. Wimbledon's close to me, I'd recommend Cox and Buckles in Wimbledon too... very happy to work on P6's as well.

My car hates starting from cold, choke cable is fine, fuel pump only 2,000 miles old. Timing now correctly set. etc, etc...

Hopefully just an adjustment on the carbs... still, I may need those kinds of services.

And I really could do with a new set of rear springs.
