Start of the history trail

I got a big package  ......in the post today from DVLA

It was full of information on my car's previous owners. Forgot I'd actually got round to asking for that.......

Time to get writing to all those previous owners to see if they can furnish me with some historical gems.

The history only goes back as far as 1975 although my car is a 1972. Apparently because that's when they computerised records? Anyone else come across this and how have people gathered information on ownership of S1 cars?

Dave,

My P5 is a 1970 model. I had the details of the 10 previous owners for a few years before getting my finger out and writing. was amazed to get 5 replies out of 7 letters although some were the Widows who either called or wrote.

Nothing to lose out by putting pen to paper.

Does the earliest V5 have the details of the owner previous to that on? I was lucky as I got all the old documents including the Duty form.

I heard rumours that most records if not all prior to 1975 were destroyed, either accidentally or by a fire. Both my cars I've requested history for have only gone back to 1975. Apparently there are some cars out there that don't exist because they were off the road sometime around the 1970's so their records have been lost by the DVLA

I just Googled DVLA Fire to remind myself when the fire actually was and never found it. I got side tracked with stories about 120,000 Log books printed in error that then got stolen and are in circulation  Porn scandals, drug raids  Letter bombs :? Sounds like there's never a dull moment to be had working there :|
Fingers crossed that many of the earlier cars still had the original owners when the fire occurred so that the history can still be complete.
