Speedo Issues

Does any one pehaps have a detailed diagram of the dashboard & speedo items. The reason for my request,is as follows.I have had my mech look at the speedo cable, thinking it had snapped on my last run.He has said to me that is all ok,however the speedo still does not work.According to my mech, the cable is fine as is the speedo mechanism.Unfortunatley my mech had decided to close everything before taking any pic's of the layout .
My car is a 74 p6 series 2. Are there any gears within the gearbox which may break ,thus preventing the speedo from working. Also does the grabox need to be removed for this? This seems to be where the issue is, please also include a diagram of the gearbox if availabel.

My E-mail is winston.shoesmith@fluor.com

There are angle drives at gearbox end and behind the speedometers which the cable attaches to. You can see the one on the gearbox by removing the rubber cover in the transmission tunnel. The speedometers end is fiddly to get in and out...

Having had another chat to my mech it seems that the speedo end is ok.He had disconnected both ends and tested the cable, by turning it.The speedo would then work fine. This indicates that the gearbox side is at fault. How big an excersize is it to rectify this, and does the gearbox need to be dismantled?

Auto cars have an angle drive at the gearbox end, which is a common failure, manual cars don't have one there. The ends can break off the inner cables, and it's possible for the speedo driven gear inside the box to strip its teeth as it's only plastic. The drive gear in the box is steel so won't strip, but it can spin on the shaft if the rear flange is loose. Both the driven gear, and the drive gear can be removed without removing the box in both manual and auto cars, but it involves removing the tailshaft housings. If the car is an auto, 99% of the time it will be the gearbox angle drive at fault.
