Hi speedline1,

A lot of auto box's do thump when selecting drive, but this is only due to adjustment of bands/kick down cable! since it has stood for a long time, it would definitely benefit to get it serviced by a good Auto box specialist!

A lot depends on the engine idle speed also. With a cold engine, and the choke out, the tickover speed would be a lot higher and the "thump" more exagerated.
Is the "thump" still there once the engine has reached running temperature? What is your engine's idling speed in r.p.m?
Regards, John.
