SD1 electronic distributor - repair kit for SD1 distributor

I have this winter given my V-8 a new brush up, new pistonrings, new gaskets, new tappets/lifters, new camshaft, overhauled cylinder heads, - well everything that could be renewed. Started up the engine 2 weeks ago and that was music to me ears.. After having enjoyed a long ride, the engine suddely set out and did so quite a few times on my way back home. I suspect the distributor which is the only thing that was transferred directly to my "new" engine. Is there a repair kit for such an electronic device or do I have to get a new complete one (and where?) My P6 has a SD1 engine installed. Regards, Chris Varming

I had the same issues with my Austin (metro electronic ignition fitted) last week and i found out that it was the distributor cap and rotor arm. So maybe you should check first if it is something cheap like this.

Have you got the Lucas OPUS dizzy from the SD1?

The internal electronics were susceptible to engine heat in the earlier models; from about the time of the Series II SD1 (ca1982) they moved the electronics out of the distributor housing which reduced the tendency for the smoke to escape.

Rimmer Bros may be able to help if you have the older SD1 distributor- though I would be inclined to wither upgrade to a later model or aftermarket ignition system if I had the funds

Let's say you've just married a rich widdow, funds no problem, what distributor would be the best in 2008? (taking in consideration what you said about heat in the engine bay, as I think this is really the problem with my old distributor) - I believe the distributor is the OPUS one, - it is deffinately a Lucas. I realize that my P6 is now far from original with a SD1 engine in it, but I use it daily for my work and I am very dependent on the Rover. Any other members with the same problem and new distributors??

I think you'll get as many answers as there are aftermarket suppliers - everyone has a favourite

I'm working on replacing the existing system and will go with a Mallory/Pertronix set up. This choice is not so much based on fancy performance requirments or any ideas about special quality but rather that it's a well known solution that's been around for a while, has good support, has had the bugs pretty well sorted and is a distinct improvement over the factory system.
