"S" gearbox oil pump

Before fitting my spare G/Box I'm getting it checked, it's only being fitted once, hopefully. The oil pump is apparently knackered, so are these a strip down and re-use or a new one? Can they be bought new? Rough cost either way if anyone knows. Cheers. Mick

I've not seen them new, and they aren't servicable. One of the suppliers may have a new one lying around, but good used is probably the way to go. Seeing as they don't stop the boxes grenading themselves it's not really worth worrying about IMHO.

I used to have a pile of Nos oil pumps, at least a dozen, still in their Leyland boxes. I sold them on to Ian Wilson, so I reckon Winns should have some.

Does this pump oil through oilways or just spray it round the box internals ?

I don't think it actually does either, but it's supposed to pump the oil through oilways, that's what the holes in the "S" mainshaft gears are (supposed to be) for. Regardless, even when the pump is fitted & operational, too much right foot and the box will go to the dentists, the only way to avoid that is to treat it with kid gloves, and if you do that you have no need for the pump anyway. They're just not up to the job, but still, they kept me in work for years.

So can it be rebuilt as the police boxes were, or are them parts obsolete now ?

AFAIK the only real difference with the Police boxes was that the gears were shot peened. Plod had very few manuals because they had found out very early that they didn't last. Once the BW65 was available that was what they used, and they were standard apart from blanking off the "1" position.

Whatever parts you use to rebuild an "S" box, be they new or used, they won't take any abuse at all, and the one part that you really need (the laygear) hasn't been available new for over 30 years. If you find a used laygear which has all its teeth you're doing well, but even if you do the hardening will be pitted through on reverse.

For all the above reasons I can't see how anyone can offer a "Reconditioned" box. You can check them over, and rebuild them using the best used parts you can find, but that's about the limit of what you can do, and now that there are better alternatives, that's the way most people choose to go.
