Running rich

DOC

Hi all
I am hoping that somebody will have previous experience of this problem.
I have o 3500 auto 1976 which has always been a bit lumpy at idle and has now become worse and stalls all the time.
It is obvious that the motor is running very rich indeed and hardly needs the choke to start.
I have carried out the following
Checked choke mechanism for operation
Changed the air filters.
Checked for vhigh float levels
Smooth movement of piston
Corredt position of needle

In my opinion to get the engine idling at all the jet is now set too high and the other mystery is that both carbs are doing the same as both sets of plugs are getting sooty.

HELP please

DOC,
I had a similar problem with a '75 V8 auto (my second of three) and I finally cured it by fitting new rubber o rings to the cold start assemby (assuming that your car has HIF6 carbs). Simple as that but it took me a long time to track down the little culprits!
Regards, John.
