running problems - engine wont rev

I wonder if any member has come across the problem I am getting with my 2000 sc?Iwas travelling along at sixty when the engine started to faulter as if there was no fuel I pulled the reserve but no difference I eventualy got home at forty. Since then the car has been off the road. It will rev to 2000 revs but then splutters and eventually pops through the carboretor. It will tick over fine and rev to 2000 fine. I have replaced the fuel pump, condensor points, distributor yet it still does this. Hope someone can help me as I am hoping to go to Lotherton Hall in it.

Thanks
Gary

Try running without an air filter. For a short period to see if top speed increases. Guess the rest!

If no improvement then check carb to see if any linkage etc is loose - sounds like could be enriched mixture (choke stuck on?)

If you are in the habit of using reserve check for needle intermittent blockage in the carb. Full starvation then a quick flooding as blockage moves as you have throttle well open. This could give the back fire you describe thru' carb

Pop back through the carb is caused by the weak mixture.
Sounds like a blocked needle or float valve.

I had a similar problem a while back, but that turned out to be the fuel pump hanging off ! seeing as you've replaced the pump I'll assume its not that....

Try dropping the bottom off the float chamber (if its that design) and clearing it out, might be some bits of crud in there.

After renewing carb ,distributor, coil, distributor cap, points, condenser, rotor arm etc etc all to no avail.I decided to take the fuel pipes off at the tank end, then diconnect at the reserve tap end,I pushed a length of soft wire through both pipe and couldnt believe the amount of crap that came out.I then dropped the tank float only to find more put it all back together and hey presto everything fine.So if any members have a similar problem to the one I had do this first before you start spending money on bits.

Main culprit is condesation can form in the fuel tank, causing rust, which collects in the bottom and gets sucked up the fuel line.

Thats why the fuel lines don't usually go from the very bottom of the tank, so there's some room left at the bottom for the crud to collect.

I would also consider fitting a nice big in-line fuel filter, should help prevent further problems.

Richard :D

Thought I had solved the problem by cleaning fuel lines out etc but next time I started the car problem back.Even tried fitting electric fuel pump but fault still there, put back to mechanical pump.someone said it may be the exhaust ie. one of the boxes collapsed inside replaced full exhaust with one I had hanging around no change.Compression all at 180 so nothing there just wont rev past 3000 revs then faulters.Could the servo have any part in this unusual fault as I have tested with a vaccum tester and the vaccum does seem to faul back when the fault occurs any suggestions would be great as I am now at a loss. thanks gary

This may be a bit simple from a newcomer but when you open the fuel filler cap is there a rush of air?

Did you try a different coil ?? I was going to suggest condensor but noted you fitted a new one.

Did you drop the bottoms of the float chambers to remove crud ?? How about an inline fuel filter ?

Hope you get to Lotherton on sunday, we'll be watching out for you !

Richard :)

tried a coil also did the float chamber thing today I am going to go over everything Ive done to see if Ive missed anything looks like I may be going to lotherton in my modern car worse luck regards gary

Solved the problem at last after checking everythig I had done again Ilooked at the back exhaust section I had taken off ,looked in good nick etc then I tried to push a long screwdriver up it only went so far then stopped about halfway through the box.Ithen did the same with the one I had fitted on the car exactly the same, luckily I had another back section hanging around did the same went a lot further put that one on and revved like a good un thank god problem solved lotherton here we come! gary

Are the engine breather pipes or filters blocked we Had to replace them every 10000 or they coursed some funny porblems
