Rover P6 'complete' to restore - is this your lucky day?

An unusual situation which I hope one of you enthusiasts might help with.

In my mother-in-law's garage sits a F reg (1966??) P6 2000, partially dismantled. It has been like this for many years - my brother in law started to restore it (new wings sitting in his bedroom ready for fitting!) but for all sorts of reasons the project got halted 15 years ago and despite promises to the contrary never got restarted.

This car was driven into the garage in full running order and with a full MOT so there is essentially nothing wrong with it, other than needing put back together(!!). The garage is dry and whilst I haven't looked for a while, things shouldn't have deteriorated or corroded much even with this long time.

My mother in law is now of an age where she needs to clear the garage and de-clutter so this car is looking for a good home - but read on for the definition of a good home......

Basically, the car is of great sentimental value; the last family car bought by my father in law (who died before I even met my wife) and a last link with him. This is why it has been kept for so long while my brother in law 'gets around to it', but he has finally accepted that it is impractical for him (he now lives 200 miles away). But it does mean that he and my mother in law want to see it go to someone who will guarantee restoration rather than breakage for parts. I am no expert, but I would say that it is a very good candidate for restoration, no modifications and principally original parts.

So if you are interested in this please expect the third degree about your intentions! My brother in law is very knowledgeable about the marque and will suss out breakers quickly!

The car is in Bournemouth. You will need to arrange collection. Most of the car is still 'on chassis' but there are various bits (seats, bits of carpet, new wings, etc) that have been removed and will need separate packing/ handling. Entirely probable that some bits will be missing but the car is pretty much complete as far as I can tell. We are not looking for money for the car, though a donation to charity would be welcomed, the prime factor is finding someone who will cherish it in the way we would have liked but not been able to.

If you are interested, please contact me at robert.mayne@googlemail.com rather than through this board

This sounds like an exceptionally interesting project for a true P6 enthusiast to get their teeth into... Is there any chance of some pictures please...?

Sadly, no photos to hand, and it will be the weekend before anyone can get down to take some, but will try to post them early next week.

You are right about this being one for the true P6 enthusiast.

Sorry for delay on this, for some reason my previous attempt to reply didn't upload.

I don't know the technical shade, but I'd describe it as a muddy dark grey. And it's manual.

Hello,
Just been reading this 'article', and i have noticed how there are no posts saying that this car has been taken. Can I ask if it has been taken, or not? If it is still there, could you tell me where abouts the car is situated so i can get an idea of travelling costs. and finally have you got the V5c documents?

Cheers, Adam.

Hello to all still following this thread, and apologies for not getting back to those who have emailed me in the interim with enquiries.

We thought we had found a good home for this beast, but it fell through. Subsequently, sentimentality got the better of my mother in law and brother in law, so it still languishes in a garage in Southbourne, Bournemouth while they decide its fate.

It has wheels but they are not attached. A matter of moments to put them back on, though.

It has seats (red leather, well worn) which are in a bedroom, and carpets (original) which are distributed in various nooks and crannies. All bits should easily fit in the boot and passenger compartment for transportation!

The engine (I believe) was running fine when last garaged, it had failed an MoT on bodywork and the intention was to re-do more than needed to bring it up to a good standard and last a few years

This is a car which you will need a winch and transporter/trailer to move. It is definitely not towable. The garage is in a narrow lane and turning space is tight. But do not assume the worst, it should be basically sound since the garage is dry, but do not underestimate the effort involved to move it and get it roadworthy. I really do think it will be effort well rewarded, but it's not a first-timer project.

I would very much hope that I will persuade Grandma to let it go over the course of the next month or two but I cannot make any guarantees. So all those interested, please email me at robert.mayne@gmail.com (don't post on the site as I don't view it very often) and I will try to sort out an orderly queue.....

Regards

Robert
