Hi all.I took my p6 for a run and all was well apart from the fact that the clutch biting point seemed to have dropped. All gears are still engaging but when I removed the top off the clutch master I could not see any fluid in it.Would I get away with just topping it up ?
Kind regards
Tony.

Unlikely, the fluid has leaked from somewhere.

I’d check behind the pedal inside the car. Pull off the rubber boot and feel for fluid. If that’s dry I’d get under the car and check inside the boot of the slave cylinder for fluid. If you’re lucky it’s the slave, which is the easier to replace. Also, buy a complete new unit instead of trying to resell if possible. The slaves are pretty cheap.

Wins have both master and slave cylinders available new. Wins International - Bringing you quality parts for British classics since 1987.

Thank you.I suspected as much.I will take a look tomorrow.Appreciated.

Hopefully its the slave - less messy and easier to replace. The PLASTIC clutch master on my Mazda3 died last year and soaked the interior under the carpet. Clutch slaves on MX5s need replacing every couple of years, not worth fixing.

I hope so too.I am going to have a look later.

I just had both my master cylinders rebuilt with stainless steel bore linings. More expensive than those aftermarket items but you don't need to worry about the bores again, even if they need new seals at some point in the future.
They worked out at £120 each all in.

That is the only proper fix. And really not expensive in the scheme of things.

But make sure you choose a good company. When I got my car the clutch master had been resleeved poorly and would leak back at full depression (poorly bored so the bottom of the cylinder was wider) plus the edge of the sleeve had a sharp edge that cut washers as they were fitted. I found out the company that had done the work now have a poor reputation for quality of work.

I use Past Parts in Suffolk. A very long-established & experienced company.
I had the same thing done to the rear calipers some years ago & more recently the master & rear wheel cylinders on my A60 Oxford.

Thanks everyone for your replies.Even more mystified now.Had a good look yesterday after topping up with fluid.I could not find any evidence of fluid leakage on either the master or slave cylinders.Took it out for a run and did about 30 miles.Checked the fluid and it was still full.I think I will book it in to get it checked properly though. Thanks again.

If leaking from the master it can sometimes drip into the box section between the bulkhead and the engine bay. Feel the push rod going to the pedal, I bet that’ll be wet.
