replacing roof panel?

Having recently purchased a almond V8 auto with a brown vynil roof, I have had to seek out a replacment gearbox. Err so I bought 3 more almond cars... 2 V8's and a 2200.
At least 1 will be broken giving me a Almond steel roof to repalce the vynil one there.

Does the roof panel come out with being "stuck down"? as I'd like to ditch the grotty vynil covered panel. (way down list of jobs but I'd keep the roof panel of the scrap car.)

Also do we reckon silicon sealant ok to seal on re-fitting?

oh and yes I currently have 5 p6's ..... ???

Yesterday I rang JP and Kingsdown for their opinion on sealants for roof panel and they both say "Traditional non setting windscreen sealant" so thats what I've gone for. A 3M product from my local paint factors.

Just in the process (as I write I'm taking a break) of recovering my estate roof with new vinyl. It is a total a**e of a job.

If you ever need to do it use a spray adhesive (it's impossible to avoid lumps with brush on stuff)

AND it needs to pairs of hands, when it says contact adhesive on the tin in b****y well means it!

All the swearing involved means the dog is now hiding under the bed upstairs, I think I'm going to be crying by the end of day!

Hi scauto,

I took my roof off about a year ago. There are twenty eight screws holding it on. The original sealant was still good, although showing signs of brittlenes; it all scraped off easily. I think that I used an Evode brand sealant when I put the roof back on --- can't remember what it was right now, but I'll check my emails and post the details if I find them.

I imagine silicone sealant would be fine, if you use the right type. Try a websearch to see what's out there.

Roof removal is a fairly easy job - Just remember to wear goggles, a rusty shard of metal in the eye is not a pleasant experience! - I have a roof to replace mine which has a leaky sunroof, but I am going to wait untill the weather picks up a bit before I change it so I used plain old silicone sealant from a builders merchant to temporarily fix the leaks in the sunroof and now have a copletely watertight car, I can see no reason why you shouldnt use it to seal the roof, I am going to use it on mine!
Cheers
Al

I considered using Silicon sealant but in the end I decided to give it a miss as I always seem to get in such a mess wheh I'm using it! If it's of any interest the 3M sealant I bought was £5 a tube so silicon will probably work out cheaper as well.

I would recommend you try and get a traditional type silicon sealant (the one that smells of vinigar) The modern water soluble ones are not very good and tend to crack easily.

I bought some black gutter stuff from B&Q.

I can highly recommend not to buy it because, it was messy and the way it sets is probably not ideal.

Its Black and non-setting, I have a wee tub in the garage, but would need to get a big un - which I can.... thanks
