Recomended Oils

I've just received an email from a member, asking what grade of oils he should be using in his V8, and SD1 5 speed box

Being a 4 pot 4 speed 2nd class citizen, I thought I would pop the question here, for those more experienced.

Richard :)

The V8 should be run on nothing 'thinner' than a 15W-40 oil, preferably a quality 20W-50 such as Millers, Penrite or Valvoline Racing (if the engine is fairly clean internally.)
Change it at 3K mile/6 month intervals, or preferably more often.

There is/was a gearbox oil for the 5-speed box made by Castrol (called SMX or something like that) that is ideal for the SD1 gearbox.
If that is not avalible a quality ATF can be used, but not in P6 manual boxes!

Hope this helps! ;)

Speaking of changing the oil........

Is there any set routine for changing the oil and the filter?
I have been told that the pump can air lock and you may have to pack it with vaseline. Any tips?

Johnny. ;)

You must not leave the filter off any length of time, or the pump drains.

What i do is:
Get the engine fully warm and use a flush if you wish (only if no thick 'black sludge' is present).
Drain old oil/flush.
Whilst draining, fill new filter with new oil (to 3/4 full). Then Fill sump with new oil and then change the filter as quickly as poss.
Run engine at idle only, until oil light goes out. If light does not go out in a few seconds stop the engine. You may have to prime the pump but it is unlikely if you use this method.

Further to the last.....

I drained the oil and refilled the system allowing enough room for the oil in the new filter.

I then quickly changed the filter - no probs.

Thanks once again!

I am a member of COSTCO. Dont know if you have one in your area.

I bought Chevron 20/40 multigrade.

Apparently, it is excellent quality and was less than £20 for 25 litres!!!

Thanks once again, John. :D

That is cheap!
I used to be a member of Costco when I worked in Liverpool. I ended up spending all my wages in there, its addictive!

Chevron is a good oil, American I think, as is Costco. And at that price you can change the oil every 1000 miles!
