Rear Springs - Jumped out

I have just had the P6 for an MOT, on going to collect it they told me the rear springs were out of there mountings. Does anybody know of this happening, my feeling is they tried to jack it up using the di dion tube and this has caused the problem. I would welcome any input re this as if they have caused the problem they should be held responsible for repairs.

Can't really understand how that can happen as even if the rear suspension is allowed to hang down the shock absorbers usually don't allow it to come down far enough for the springs to move. Jacking up under the De Dion although not recommended, won't cause the problem they say you have.
The one thing to learn from this is always observe them doing the test, and if the tester does something you're not happy with, tell him to stop, it's your car after all!

Harvey I was unfortunate and had to leave the car with them I as you say cannot think how it happened and was trying to find out if anyone else has had the same thing happen to them.

I'm fairly sure you can't remove the springs without either compressing them or removing the shocks to allow the arms to fall. Maybe incorrect over-long shocks have been fitted, or shorter springs, or both ?

I had the car up on a ramp today to see for myself and the springs look original as do the shocks. They appear to have shifted rear ward and come out of the reccess in the body.
Idid check for any marks for evidence of jacking in the wrong place but can see none.

Do you mean the top of the spring has moved ? Agree with Harvey lets have a picture !

Shouldn't be possible unless the tin worm has been at work

Either that or the top of the spring has broken off and fallen away so shortenening the overall length of the spring. It still shouldn't move out of the seat unless the bottom arm drops right down.

It is not the dreaded tin worm, they have just jumped out of the top mounting. I hope to be under the car within the next few days so I will get a photo posted ASAP. I just in a fit of madness purchased a P%B which has not been used since its MOT in September so have been getting it cleaned up a bit.

Further to what I said about part of the end of the spring breaking off and falling away, although they can (and do) break, the way the ends are made they can't fall away because of the s/abs being in the way, but the broken part could end up in the spring seat at the bottom. I will be interested to see the outcome as I can't ever remember seeing the springs coming out of the top seat as you say.

Harvey as you say I myself can not remember ever seeing one jump out. I tried to get the car up high enough to get a photo but as I lost my regular workshop space I do not have a pit now to get a decent view. I may try and get it over to a riendly dealer who used to let me use the ramp at night when only the petrol station was open. I will put on my knee pads and beg.

Good news as it was the weekend I managed to obtain the use of a ramp at a local car dealer who was more interested himself. The long and short of it is the springs are now back in place, a lot of oaths were being said but after removing the rear s/a and a little elbow grease with a long lever they went back. How with the amount of force needed to put them back they jumped is beyond reason.
If anyone wants i can email a photo of the springs as the were yesterday.
Many thanks to all who replied.
Bill

As I mentioned earlier I'd be interested to see the picture.(unfortunately if you do, I'm not technically competent enough to post it on the site.)

Thanks Bill, received the photo and here it is....

After refitting them it does not appear to have shims, this was the good side ( O/S) the nearside one was more difficult to refit. I am sure Rover would not have approved the method in the manual but the end result was OK by me. :)

Just to keep those who were interested the car passed it's MOT last week under my watchful eye this time, just to make sure they jacked it up correctly. So I am now back running around Edinburgh.
