Quick question...

Hi all, just a quickie. Can anybody tell me what size the bolt is in the middle of the crank pulley? My socket set only goes up to 22mm and it seems bigger than that, so if i'm going to buy one at halfords prices i'd like to make sure i get the right size!

Many thanks,

Rich

Hi Rich,

The (sometimes) infamous crank pulley bolt then!

IIRC it's 15/16" A/F. I've got a 24V impact wrench and the right 6-point impact socket if you'd like a loan. It can be a resistant b****r!

Hi )

WE'll see - I just want to turn the crank round so i can get the bolts out of the torque converter - i assume this is the best way of getting to them all?

WE definitely still have to meet up some time!

I'm just preparing some things ready for when i get another crane next weekend. The first one decided to give way with the engine in the air so this time i'm just going to hire one rather than buying second hand.... £37 from hss tool hire on abbey lane from friday to monday so i'm informed.... I'm swapping the torque converter onto the 'new' engine as it's known working and the 'new' one looks rather rusty....

Rich.

No problem Rich. It's definitely a 5/8" UNF bolt with a 15/16" hex head. I find a square-section screwdriver laid between the 6 screw heads on the crank pulley OK for turning it over.

Abbey Lane HSS is not far from me...let me know when you're coming over and hopefully I'll be around. With the kettle on maybe!

Cheers,

Cool - we actually used to live in leicester just off fosse road north ) It'll probably be this friday evening sometime but i'll let you know!

Thanks,

Rich

If you just want to turn the crank then why just whip the spark plugs out and try it by hand or the use of the fan belt.

Colin

I'm in unknown territory so yes if that would work i'll give it a go!

thanks,

Rich.

Colin's right...I forgot to mention "plugs out" with my screwdriver thing.

Cheers Rich, hope to be around on Friday.

Well - i gave up yesterday as events conspired against me. Halfords didnt have any 15/16th sockets (they say there's a shortage??? ) and nowhere else was open, then saw the post about the spark plugs and discovered i had 3 spark plug sockets not one of which could fit in the recess in the head on the V8. And then it started hailing. So it's waiting till next weekend... Sometimes it's just not meant to be!

Stan, I'll give you a text closer to friday )

Rich.

A 24 mm socket is close enough to 15/16th's
Can't you turn your engine by pulling on the fan blades while pressing in on the fan belt to prevent it slipping ?

You need a very slim socket to fit a V8 .Normally made by grinding away the outside of a box spanner or a plug socket till it fits

I just need to get the plugs out by the sound of it. None of my 3 spark plug sockets will fit... I'm going to go shopping in a bit. Take baby phoebe for a ride (might make her sleepy anyway ;o))

Hopefully then it'll turn easily... I only want to turn it so i can get to the bolts holding the torque converter in as it's awkward position wise.

Rich.

Turn the engine over using a spanner on the converter bolts themselves, then when you get to a position where two bolts are visible undo one, then use the other to turn the engine over until two are visible again and continue until all 4 bolts are removed. No need to remove the plugs or keep getting out from under the car to turn the fan or the crank. If you know what you're doing you won't even need to lock the engine to undo them. Simples.

I love this (virtual) place - all the answers are here :O)

I now have a spark plug spanner that will fit which will come in useful. The engine's not in the car yet - waiting till i've hired the engine crane at the weekend for that. The other one is half in half out since the first crane collapsed. I need to get it out before swapping the torque converter from that one to the 'new' engine.

I'll give that a go with the torque converter tomorrow night hopefully. I need to swap the spark plugs for the new ones i've ordered anyhow so now i've got this new spark plug spanner i'll probably do that anyway first if it makes it easy :O)

Thanks all for the great suggestions.

Rich
