Quality of carpets - bad ?

Yesterday a German P6 friend reported that he´d ordered a full set of carpets for his P6 V8 in UK. He was very disappointed that the new carpets (bought from a dealer) are not as good as expected. They don´t fit properly.

Any more experiences ?

Hi Rudiger,

You can't expect carpets to just "go in" without some fettling and a bit of cutting. Indeed I noticed that my old carpets that I took out (the originals) has some cutting done to make them fit properly the first time round.

New carpet is also very stiff and a bugger to form around the transmission tunnel - but nobody makes anything but flat carpet, and transmission tunnels are not! So it does take a lot of time, a lot of patience, a lot of swearing but it's worth it in the end.

The bottom of the A-post is a real swine, the original carpet needs to be examined to see just how it was originally folded and stitched - the new carpet will be fine just folded, but it is like performing origami with a strong stiff piece of carpet. The first time you see the A-post / sill section of the new carpet you do think "absolutely no way - it's got to be a fault" but it will, with care and patience and using the original as a guide.

You also have to do a lot of folding. No carpet edge should be exposed, so remember to always tuck them under to have the 'fold' as the edge.

I bet it's the A-post your friend is complaining about!

I have to agree with Brian !
I bought a brand new set,cut to the original pattern from Coverdale, and with a little patience and time they will fit well.
It is also worth noting that the main front footwell carpets are 2 types!!
Cut to fit for manual or automatic cars!!
Trying to fit manual ones in an auto will mean they are too big, auto into a manual too small!!
I suppose if this is the problem they could of sent the wrong set to you???
It is neccasary to totally remove all the seats, center console seatbelts and other trim.
you can use the old carpets as a pattern/guide to how best to trim the new carpet to fit!
VERY IMPORTANT!! To remember to trim off a bit at a time, trial fit then trim a bit more if needed!!
If you cut too much off in your first trimmings, you cannot put it back on!!
Dont forget the underlay also will need trimming to fit!!
It took me a good long weekend to do mine, and there are still a few places it could be better!!!
The carpet will have to settle into shape for a while, then you can do some fine adjustments!!
Tell them this!!
"Dont let it get to you, take your time and enjoy it,take pleasure in your achievements, and think about the satisfaction and the money your saving by doing it yourself!!!
