Post Misfire Oil Contamination!!

Hi all,
just a word of warning for anyone that has experience over fueling/misfire issues lately, though I'm sure most of you would be aware of this already. With the assistance of our RO, Tony Hanby, I finally got around to getting all three of my V8s up and running properly Saturday. When we got to car no.2, my weber equipped 3500S, we found that it would not start due to a failed (brand new) condensor. Tony went through the entire ignition system and set it up. It fired immediately but we noticed a nasty tapp from the top end. We shut her down immediately and checked the oil. To be on the safe side I drained it, about 6 litres came out, mainly petrol!! This car has an electric pump, so the fuel must have washed down the bores from all the cranking and poor running. Luckily she ran perfectly once filled with Duckhams 20W50 and a new filter, both of which will be changed again after a few miles. The other 2 are getting the same treatment. Could have been an expensive mistake!!
Regards,
Dave

:?: :?: :?: Is your electric pump in series with your old mechanical pump? it certainly seems a little unlikely that you woulf fill the sump so quickly by cranking alone??

Graeme,
the mechanical pump was removed years ago, well before I bought the car so down the bores was the only route. Compression is excellent, with Tony commenting that the engine was very fresh. I've had problems spanning serveral months with 2 of the cars. I made a lot of attempts to start the weber equipped car, running down several batteries in the process, and pumping in fuel with the throttle, and by the looks of it washing it down the bores. The only time i've seen contamination like this was on a ride on mower, which it turns out had the entire crankcase full of fuel!!

Dave

There was a short article in Pratical Classics about an owner of a laid up car that would not start. (can't remeber make of car) The first monkey that tried to start it did nothing but turn it over and over. The second garage set the car up correctly and started it up with the same effect as 'dmcsweeny' saw with he's car, noisy when it ran. The garage did the same and shut it down and drained the oil to find it full of fuel!!!!

It's not good for the piston rings

Can't imagine it was, but the issue is sorted now so I won't repeat it  . You did warn me in a previous post about cranking it too much! It usually fired up, but it took alot of attempts. I'd been through the ignition system a few times so was blaming the carb, but once started she ran like a dream. All it take now is 4 pumps of the throttle and a few revolutions and she fires up. The other cars are getting oil changes as a precaution. Going to change the oil in the contaminated engine again shortly as well to get it all flushed out. Though i'd imagine the petrol has done that  .

Dave

Hi, probably why it wouldn't start, petrol wash all the oil down and so was down on compression.
