Ive been putting off replacing the oil pump gears on my 74 V8 for a while now,but as ive had a few other jobs to do on her i might as well do it.Has anyone done this on their cars if so how difficult/easy is the job. ???

John

Hello John,
this is a fairly easy job. The most difficult thing is access room. I was fortunate to have a pit in my previous garage which may make it a little more comfortable. You'll need a small, imperial socket set or (as I used) an offset ring spanner and a box spanner.
Pack the gears with petroleum jelly (vaseline) and use a new gasket (probably came with the gears, anyway) tighten gently then torque to 10-15 ft lbs (I guessed this by hand and experience!)
By the way, I do not recommend fitting the uprated spring in the relief valve as a new, standard one is more than up to the job and if you increase your oil pressure too much then any leaks will be greater! This is especially true on the older engines with rope crankshaft seals.
Regards, John.

Thanks John.Ive got the car raised about 2 feet in the garage so access shouldn't be a problem.I'll be doing it sometime this week so i'll let you know how i did. Thanks again.

the bolts holding the base cover are not hexsagonal but 12 pointed - like torx.

you won't be able to undo them with a socket but need at spanner (8mm?) with 12 points.
You can expect them to be quite tight - examine them carefully for damage/stretching since if they snap when you do them back up, you will create a hell of a lot more work to remove them.

Thanks for all the advice but just to let you know ive done the job.Pretty straight forward job just very cold garage floor!!.Ive changed the oil(DUCKHAMS 20/50/NEW FILTER) and its running very smoothly.Am i best going easy,as in running in or will i be ok for normal use?

off thread - but a decent bit carpet or thick card board or even a sheet of hardboard (£4!) on the floor makes it all so much more fun :D
