Hello Lewis,

I have heard that transmission fluid will do a great job of cleaning up the engine. Drain one litre or so of old engine oil and add one litre of transmission fluid. Go for a drive for an hour or so, drain the contents and change the filter. I am informed that it does indeed work very well.

I have never needed to try it myself.

Some people swear by diesel engine oil as it is extra detergent
Whatever you use , you'll need to change the oil and filter regularly till the muck has all gone

I'd be wary of using Diesel (detergent) oil while there was the possibility of a lot of crud (black death) in there which could end up floating around the engine and possibly causing damage. Once things are nice and clean to start with I'd see it as a good idea though.

hello
thanks for the replys.
i may just change the oil, put in some cheapy stuff, run for 10 mins, change again and hopefully that will get rid of a lot of it.
then il try the diesel stuff:)
cheers

Be sure to change also the oil filter BEFORE AND AFTER you use the detergent. A clogged oil filter will be bypassed and send all the dirt straight to the bearings.
You don't want this to happen.

Hello Lewis,

After you start using the diesel oil, you may well find an increase in oil consumption until such time as the engine is considerably cleaner.

I always tend to flush through twice with a cheap (generic brand) oil, its amazing how dirty the second flush still is, then change the oil filter. My dad was a mechanic in the late 50's early 60's and he recalls how they used a light flushing oil then (similar to a light penetrene oil), and has always done two flushes on his cars, and even added a cup (to 4 litres of oil) of kerosine to help the clean out. although as pointed out this can take off the varnish and which can cause a bit more tappet noise until a varnish is re-established. I must admit I have also done the same without any detriment to any of my vehicles (or any noticable tappet noise) although I do just tend to use straight oil now. I'd add the kero to the first flush and the second would be purley (cheap) oil flush, then as mentioned earlier change the oil filter and add the good oil. I suppose it does add a little to the cost of doing it this way and also the more oil to dispose of, but when you see how dirty the first flush is and how cleaner the second flush is its good to give the good oil a fighting chance of protecting and staying cleaner longer, eh what?

Regards

It's also well worth removing the sump every, say, 20k miles for a good clean out.
If it's never been done there can be up to a quarter of an inch of sludge sitting at the bottom of it!
It doesn't help that the drain plug threaded boss sits proud of the inside of the sump base either.
