Oil and filter change

I think I remember it being mentioned on another thread some time ago that you should not drain the oil and then remove the old filter as this can cause problems with the pump? Am I right in saying you need to drain the old oil, leave the old filter on, partially refill with new oil then remove old filter and replace with new one? If this is they way to do it, don't you get covered in a load of your new oil pouring out whilst removing the old filter and getting the new one in place?

Before you start fill the new filter with fresh oil, (do this several times as it soaks up oil) With the engine warmed up, drain the oil, while it's draining, change the filter, refit the sumpplug re-fil with oil, run the engine to regain pressure, then re check the level.(This is the procedure for V8's, obviously you can't pre fill the filter on the 4 cylinder)

With the proper oil filter for the 4 cylinder, that is the filter having a standpipe, it is possible to slowly add oil to the filter letting it soak in, then inverting it and placing it on the engine.
This will give you a better start than a dry filter. If you are really worried, disconnect the ignition while turning the engine over to get up pressure before a real start.
