I've got this really orrible plastic stick on plate at the back with a naff logo on it which has been fixed on crookedly to my '75 V8.

I would really like a nice tailor fitting one to replace it.

Does anyone know of a company/person that will make a rear number plate to fit the P6 surround the way they used ta make 'em!

Ta.

Nigel,

I have found great difficulty in obtaining new plates.

The problem is that the government changed the law on new plates which affects any car that doesn't wear black no reflective types plates.

You can verify this on the dvla website but if you need a new plate then it should be the standard font which looks wierd on and old car. People got really funny about making them and I especially want the the puka raised letter ones but no joy.

Recently I have seen cars with all sorts of fonts and sizes so it looks like folks have waited until the dust settled.

I found a place that made them for me but would only do the standard size and not the full size required for the p6.

let us know if you find some.

Yes the law changed and is still very much current. All acrylic plates are now only available in the 2001-on typeface, with the firm's identification at the bottom and will have a BS kite mark. You will need to provide V5 when ordering.

However, ask for a 'show plate' and they'll create what you want and no ID is required. However, this is illegal - although in practice it's unlikely to be spotted unless if you take the pish with the typeface and plod tugs you, or the MOT tester is ruthless.

So simply buy two sets, one standard, and one in the old style. Funnily enough my show plates arrived on BS kite marked acrylics! Sites like fancyplates.com and ccmotorsport.co.uk are commonly used and reasonable. Try asking them if they can source or cut the acrylic to size you require. At MOT time swap over if need be.

Hope this helps.

I know that Brown & Gammons in Baldock (I also own a couple of MGs) can make up traditional style plates. Whether they would do them for a post 73 car I don't know. I'm sure that there are other classic car specialists that can also produce the traditional style plates.

There are also several companies based outside the UK that can produce plates to non-standard design, but they may not be able to produce them to fit the P6 rear plate dimensions.
