New Formula 1 Season

With the new F1 season kicking off next week in Bahrain, do we have any thoughts / predictions for the up-coming season.?
Here's mine;

1. Personally would like to see Jenson retain his title. Why? well ,a) he's English; and b) he's a decently nice guy from the west country(where I originally came from), c) be nice as generally the media seems to be against retaining it anyway.

2.Don't particulary like Hamilton. Too self-obsessed, too conceited, too manicured/manufactured , looks like he wears make-up (lipstick and mascara),he's a liar, and has got the Maclaren team wrapped around him-unfortunately, so he may come out better.

3. I think the maclaren team thing will turn into a "soap-opera" thing; having the two brits in same team, with bickering going on etc;

4.With British media centred on Maclaren, they are forgetting other very strong possibilies, notably Ferrari Alonso /Massa combination, Mercedes Schui /Brawn.

5.Through "rose-tinted" specs would like to see Lotus win a race or even Hispanio (who?) because of Bruno Senna , Ayrton's nephew.

Also put this on Forum of Fiat Motor Club GB , of which I'm also a member, so be interesting to see views.

Having been a Lewis fan since the early days I'd like to see Lewis get it back. That said I've never been a Schuey fan but am looking forward to the battles ahead as I think Lewis has enough of the racer in him to really push Schuey, Alonso is an also ran as far as I'm concerned, not really talented but he just has a good car under him, think Jacque villeneuve, Button did start to develop more of a racing attitude but I don't think it's really "him". He has to really dig deep for it as Lewis can't stop himself from doing it in situations he really ought not to, I think the corporate machine that is Mclaren has made Lewis what he is attitude wise, he is a company man but that said I'm not sure if the company can afford too many shenanigans after the last few years, but I do feel that there will be certain issues arising over the coming season.
I'd love to see a lotus win too, I'd also like to see a JPS Lotus paint job too but I fear I wont be seeing either unfortunately but we can hope. The Hispania team has mildly amused me in the recent months, after their recent name change to HRT racing I had visions of the car breaking out in a sweat halfway round the circuit only to explode in a fit of rage leave all the other cars for dead driving round the circuit as if they were looking for parking to finish the race 1 lap ahead, swiftly break down in tears and grow a wispy beard all before the champagne cork pops. We have to kill time some way between F1 seasons don't we. New regs this year too, unless they've changed it again. No refuelling and new points system so we'll see how that turns out for the Poison Dwarf (Uncle Bernie), could open up the field a bit, look at Brawn in the early part of last season, Can't wait now, roll on saturday quali.

Alonso is not really talented?????

I remind that he's a world champion twice. Furthermore driving a Renault, neither a McLaren nor a Ferrari!! Is he not talented enough??

Hamilton just took advantage of Alonso's talent when both driving for McLaren. The main crash point between them was that Hamilton just made to his car the same Alonso did to his, as Hamilton is thoroughly unable to tune a car up.

If Alonso has now a good car under his feet I think it's not because he's not talented, but because he has shown that he is so talented that he is able to become champion a second line car twice.

Well, anyway we will see the next season, but one thing is clear for me. Hamilton will finish the season well behind Fernando Alonso.

I think a lot of F1 drivers are like footballers .........

You don't seem to people with massive egos in the World Rally Championship and in my favourite form of motorsport - rallycross . Lots of middle aged overweight men in that - probably why I like it

Must agree there, premier footballers, F1 stars .....spot the difference. Similar contest too, those with the more money/ resources, are usually the ones that win. (And me a Chelsea supporter, albeit a long term one from the days of Ossie, Bonnetti,Ronnie Harris, etc;)

I think Alonso will be very much a dark horse this year and a very strong candidate and I certainly won't rule out Schumacher. Like I mentioned if there are Shenanigans at Maclaren , might let there competitors just get on with the job.

According to the Mail on Sunday, today, they rate Hamilton to win championship and Jenson, third.

The Lotus is shown in British Racing Green livery with yellow striping. The JPS colours would be nice, (days of Ronnie Petersen, Emerson, and later Andretti.))

If Hamilton and Alonso both had the same car...why didnt Alonso do as well?

Its simple. he isnt as good. I will be doing the same as i always do..backing the brits. Teams and drivers, whoever. I make no secret that Lewis, for me, is the best since senna/schuey, but everyone has their own opinion, and i wont be put out if Button wins!

Im really looking forward to this season...new rules and o refueling means we might get some proper racing back, wheel to wheel, and less of this Procesion around the track which its been for the past few years!

Hi All,

Always found F1 very interesting. It’s a huge team sport, just as much (possibly more) of a team sport as say football or rugby but it’s often reported on like an individuals sport. Button won last year largely because the back room boys, the ones you never hear about, got it right, Ross Brawn is (as most people know) the key person in that team, it’s no coincidence that Schumacher won when combined with Brawn.

I think the lack of re-fueling is a good step as it rewards a team that is fuel economical, thus needs to carry less fuel; it would have been great if they’d gone the whole hog and limited peak fuel flow. I see the loss of Kers as a negative, F1 should, in my opinion, be encouraged to develop technologies with a real life practical application. Kers is still in the rules for next year and it is only by mutual agreement that no-one is running it. I think it foolish to think that the big players will stick to this agreement if they find it gives them an advantage; I would not be at all surprised to discover that some teams are still looking at it and developing it.

I do have a different view of what a proper race is; to me a proper race is one where the fastest driver in the fastest car always wins. I do not need to see on track overtaking to see a race as “proper”. To me the race on Sunday is just the playing of the hand cards; the real interesting bit is how that hand has been put together.

I've been a huge fan of Formula 1 for years but got disillusioned with it when it went to ITV and we had to put up with adverts in it. Now that it's back on the BBC at least we can watch the race uninterrupted. The fastest driver in the fastest car is all very well when you are trackside. However, most of us will be armchair fans so I for one want something else to make the race interesting, such as a good scrap on the track with overtaking, blocking and the ocassional tussle in a tight corner as drivers try to outbrake each other.

I think the decision to remove fuel/tyre stops is one that will lessen the entertainment value of the race as an element of race strategy has been removed and I think the races will be far more processional than we have seen for a few years.

Jenson Button's win last year was brilliant, more so because Brawn almost didn't have a team. This year I think Button will find it more difficult playing second string to Hamilton (those of you who don't think that will happen have not been following Formula 1 for long enough. Teams never seem to be able to split their efforts equitably and Hamilton will always be the number one concern). I will also be supporting the Brits (cars and drivers) and look forward to an interesting season.

I have a suspicious feeling that the Maclaren, with the two brits, and no longer Merc's main team, will struggle. I can't see Button & Hamilton playing nicely, like Button and Baricello did last year, neither is used to playing 2nd fiddle, so while they're scrapping, the other teams can come through.

Interesting that Schuey has Rosberg with him, this is a very familiar setup for Schuey, no1 driver with younger rookie (ok he's done a few seasons now) to back him up. I don't expect him to win, but if the other teams aren't organised from day one I wouldn't be suprised if he does.

Again, can't see Ferrari's line up working too well, Massa has been keen to be no1 in that team since Shuey left, and Alonso isn't going to play no2

All good fun, I prefer watching the pre-race and all the tech stuff, to the actual race. I also think that removing re-fueling isn't a great help, I remember how dull it was last time, nothing more exciting than a car engullfed (spelling?) in flames, or a refueling hose being dragged down the pit lane.

After all the hype, and the promise of an entertaining season , this was "BORING BIG TIME". They need to change the regulations quick. Fuel changes to come back, meaning different strategies for different teams and more chance of some overtaking as the cars are lighter, for better acceleration as well as braking.

It was about as interesting as watching paint dry after the first two laps. Like Richard, I enjoyed the pre-race build and tech talk but the race was a let down really. Are Ferrari goping to bother protesting against that fancy Mclaren gizmo that cuts drag on the straights now they got a 1,2 finish in the first race or are they going to shut up and copy it?

What they really need to do with the cars is ban the tea-trays and ironing boards so that the cars can run close to each other without the chase car being disadvantaged.

Anyway, MotoGP starts again in a couple of weeks - proper racing and no nancy boys in aftershave adverts either!

I usually lose interest as season goes on, although always watch the first race, where ever that may be held. Make a point to always watch Monaco, The British, the Belgian at Spa ,the Italian at Monza, and the San Remo. This year its a "full house" so far, never missed one. Certainly been an eventful calender so far.
